I'm considering a Nicro day/night vent for my O'day 25. I'm thinking it would work well on the front hatch. Has anyone any experience with an optimum location for such a vent. How do these solar vents compare to the less expensive passive models?

We've had the solar/battery model installed in our 37CC for about 14 mo's now, batteries have died once in that time but other than that they seem to work well - they are starting to make some noise at this point so the 2yr warranty is about to be worked. From other posts 1-2yrs seems to be the lifespan.
I'm not certain if you are wanting a real breeze in which case I think you are right on. We had a Beckson SS Vent-O-Mate that exhausted 750 c.f. of air per hour with a 7 mph breeze (sounds like an advertisment), but it really worked....on hot Kansas summer days, for 8 years this crazy little ventomate made our cabin probably 20 degrees cooler when we arrived at the boat and opened it up each Friday and it never leaked a drop.....I keep forgetting to order one.....they are fool-proof and exhaust a ton of hot stale air from the cabin and you don't even know they are working...but they don't make a breeze in....only exhaust. Nicro solar vents do a decent job, but yes they will rattle, silence is not a given. Usually they work on sun light after the batteries go dead. If you want complete silence then do not expect it to be mechanical on a boat.
I recently saw a style, maybe newer nicros, that had replacealbe batteries. Mine are sodered in.
I see lots of boats with the nicro's cut into the plexiglass of front hatches.
Some of the other brands are not stainless steel or UV resistant plastic. However, if they use same size hole, they cost less. Nicros have good track record.

Not to steal your thread, but has anyone found an affordable solar-powered vent with a battery for overnight? I been looking online for a couple years now and have only found extremely expensive or "not worth the box they're shipped in" models. I'm just looking for one I can drop over the anchor locker up front while we're on the boat to draw air through the cabin.

Maybe with summer still some months away, Capt Herring can find an alternative supplier at significantly less $$$$.$$ Give him some meaning work instead of monitoring posts...

I installed a Nicro Night/Day vent in the front hatch and am very happy with it. The motor died after a year or two but they replaced the whole unit for free. With a fresh battery & plenty of sun, it will run all night. They come with two fan blades, one for exhaust one for in. They are pretty quiet but sometimes you need to adjust the blade to ensure they stay quiet.
