Hello, I recently purchased my first boat, a 1982 Catalina 27 Tall Rig. My surveyor recommended the purchase of a headsail furling system since, a) I'm new to sailing, b) the boat doesn't have one, c) I will be sailing either single-handed or with an inexperienced crew. I was hoping that the experienced Catalina owners could share their recommendations, thoughts, and advice as to the proper system. Notes: I will have professionals install the system and, as its sure to come up, I will be taking an ASA 103, 104, 105 course in the next few weeks. Thanks.

i suggest you find the relevant issues of "practical sailor," but if memory serves they found all the majors just fine.

Furling Genoa

Hi You will find that a furling genoa is well worth the money, especially if you sail in an area where the winds are subject to frequent changes. With a tall rig boat they tend to require reefing earlier than standard rigs, and when it is nasty there is a huge safety factor to be able to lessen sail without going to the bow. I would recommend a 130% genoa anything bigger wil not furl well....Martin

My 270 (a later version of your boat) came

with a Hood furler but most of the major names are very good these days. We prefer Al. foils here as the UV is very hard on plastics, some have Torlon bearings which are self lubing and should only be rinsed with water, never lubed as it can make them sticky. Your present jib, if in good shape, can probably be altered by sailmaker to fit the furler.

Tryi CDI

I replaced an old roller furling system with a new CDI Flexible Furler a couple of years ago. I did the work myself, and have been very happy with it.

Sail Warehouse

I'd reccommend Sail Warehouse. They have a CDI furlering system with a furling 135% jib for $1375. I've purchased sails from them and have been more than happy with the quality and service. Sean
