Stu, I did several searches on how to look at a used boat, but can't seem to find the article. If anyone out there knows where it is, please post! I did see references to Don Casey's book, "Inspecting the Aging Sailboat". has anyone read this? Good starting point? Another mention Sailing Mag's July 2000 issue for 25 tips on what to look for. I'll do some web searches to see if I can find this one, and anything else to help.

Like others have said, research is key. Visit as many boats as you can. Sit everywhere in the cabin and in the cockpit. Lay down in every berth, and close every seacock. Sit on the toilet with the door closed.

Spend the money for the full survey, it will pay for itself. I, and others here can recommend a trustworthy surveyor in the Chesapeake area.

Consider getting a 30 that is cheaper and fits the bill to learn on, and then moving up to a 34 or 36. My 88 Hunter 30 has most of what you are looking for, and its not for sale

1.Consider chartering several likely boats on your vacations. Looks like a huge cost to charter, but believe me it is cheaper than buying the wrong boat.

2. Also as somebody said be sure to get a complete survey by a professional surveyor.

3. Don't bring your check book to Annapolis

Hear me now, believe me later...charter for a few years. All your questions will be answered on your own terms. Skip the dealers, talk to the charter companies at the show. The show is a dangerous place for starry-eyed newbies.

Yes, I do plan on just window-shopping for now Regarding the charters, any hints on good ones? Would love to go to calm coastal waters of the eastern carribean!!!

That's why the pitch will be something on the order of "it won't cost you anything to own". And what is your relationship worth?

The BVI is probably a good place to start, line-of-sight sailing, relatively protected waters, moorings (so you don't have to figure out how to anchor), a safe teaser for the outback down island, easy to get to and oh, that glorious gin-clear water! Moorings (Tortola) will charter to anyone with a hefty credit limit, and they have nicely appointed boats.
