New Stove for the C27

I just bought a 1982 C27, standard layout, without the stove. The previous owner had an unhappy altercation with the OEM stove over some flare-ups, and committed it to permanent storage in Davey Jones' locker. I want to buy an two-burner Origo unpressurized alcohol stove, because they're safer and they work fine on other people's boats. I want to put it in the same space as the original stove. Question: Should I get the 3000 model with gimbals that looks like a table top model in the catalogs? Or must use a flush mount 4000 model that does not gimbal? I prefer a gimbal mount stove. Has anyone put one into a Catalina? Thanks. Phil

Hi Phil: Good choice on the Origo. I installed the 4000 model in my Capri 26 and both my wife and I loved it. We never had a problem with the non gimballed model. They make pot holders if you think you would need it. Good cooking Dave S/V Westwind

Origo 3000

I have dinette, mid-galley C27. The Origo 3000 fits perfectly, has fold down cover with butcher block top, no gimbals, no protrusions. I use pot-holders and have a pressure cooker, no problems so far.

Origo 6000

I installed a 6000 (w/oven). I love it! I have the traditional layout so it eliminated the footwell for the port berth but that wasn't a loss for me. It's not gimballed but I'm on the river so... The stove is the same size as the 3000 and would have fit perfectly with the gimbals. LaDonna

Are they a drop in fit?

I also have a C-27 ('84, traditional interior) and am considering replacing the original stove. Are the non-pressurized Origo models a drop-in fit, or do they require cutting and carpentry work? Randy

Don't know for sure

As I was installing the oven version, I can't tell you if it was a "drop in fit" or not. It sure looked like it to me but there might be a half inch leeway. Only way to know for sure is to measure. BTW, if anyone is looking for a used Origo 3000, I have a friend who's selling theirs for somewhere about $150. Email me at ladonna@catalinaowners.com if you want to contact her. LaDonna
