What are your thoughts regarding the Sailrite sail kits? How difficult are these kits to make? What kind of sailing performance should be expected? Jay T.

Start small

At least that's my plan. I picked up the Anchor Riding sail kit from Sailrite (see related link below) to get an idea of the process - will let you know if I ever get around to it. Just a suggestion; you might have considerably more sail-making experience than I! Trevor

Buy a Sail New for Less than their Kit!

Sailrite's kit seems very overpriced. The expense you're avoiding is the assembly which can be done overseas very cheap. I had sails made overseas for less than the cost of the sailrite kit and they are great. I'm sure they are better than anything I could sew.

Barry is right.

Do it for the experience and for the ability to improve and repair your own sails. But don't do it just to save a few bucks. My Sailrite bimini saved me a LOT of money but it was a LOT of work. Imagine how much more time and effort for a sail! Have you ever wrestled that much cloth through a sewing machine? I have, I do my own repairs.
