Looking to pick up either a cal 28 or a newport 27. I'm leaning towards the newport due to a little more room on board. Also the newport has a motor built in. Very nice feature.

I am looking to fix it up as I go. Sailing to California and then selling the boat. Then fly to Florida possibly then using the money from the sale to buy a larger project boat. Around 30-35ft.
I have sailed before but been awhile. I intend to stay within sight of land. Just a nice casual trip down the cost.

Anyone here have ideas or tips for a newport 27?

The newport is also closer to me. Also already on the coast for easier for me to work on. The newport owner says it does run but died when the distributor quit working. It has been rebuilt just needs installed.

You will want a boat that will sell well in Southern California. Since typical boat sales can take time the boat you select may need to be one that will sell quickly even if it cost more at the beginning.

True. Both offer there pros and cons. But the cal does need more work and has to be moved by the end of the month whereas the newport is payed up until June of 2021. But I may be able to get the newport free. Not that there is problems with it just the owner no longer surfs so dosent use it anymore.

I used to have a cal 22 that i got for free. Also a bayliner buccaneer but wont even discuss those unsafe traps. Other then typical bayliner quality.

Dont get me wrong. Alot of room. But not good for open water. To top heavy. Downside to the high deck height.

Distributor? Must be an Atomic 4. I think those were the last known distributors found in engines. Just so you know there is an electronic ignition after market kit for the A-4. Check with Moyer Marine for details.

The boat is fine for where you are and in CA, nice boat; but I question whether a trip down the coast to CA is likely to be a “casual“ one. I think you’ll have your hands full. You’ll need an autopilot if sailing alone. “Sight of land” versus “close to shore” are not necessarily the same things if that is your thinking. There will be fog to contend with close to shore most of the way; so, you won’t be seeing the shore much of the time. Boat delivery skippers will typically sail at 200 n.mi. offshore for that trip if non-stop, at least coming south of San Francisco Bay. Even though a “coastal voyage”, you and the boat should be fully prepared for open-sea cruising conditions, etc. Michael Robertson wrote a brief review of the N27 In Cruising World, 2010. He used it on weekend to go surfing but no longer does

I do intend to add a second hand radar setup. Just to bE safe in the fog. Aswell as checking all lights and safety gear and make sure the motor is in good condition. I have settled on a auto pilot aswell

Past Eureka, CA the coastline tends SE. Prevailing wind (and sea) is NW. Unless you like sailing DDW in likely large seas, you may wish for the gybe angle that a position further offshore offers, etc.

I just got a boatus insurance quote and it was 115 down and about 400 a year at 7800 value with a 250. Deductible

Just be aware that BOAT US is now a GEICO company. The policy somewhere will state that for boats > 20 yr old, cost of repairs (to GEICO) will be depreciated by 10% a year for each year of boat age past 20, down to 20% of the cost. This is filed under “depreciation.” So, if you wrap the prop and bend the shaft, say; and it’s a $4,000 repair, you’ll be covered for $800 of it, less deductible, = $550 to you. If you lose the boat, however, you should get the full agreed hull value. I’d check some other companies; not all of them have that depreciation policy. Any attached equipment less than 20 yr old would not be depreciated. Say, a “new“ prop, a “new” mast or a “new“ rudder, etc.

Very good info. I didn't know that. But I do my own mechanic and fiberglass work so I'm more worried about coverage if the boat is a loss

Just remember, if you’re traveling the boat won’t be “home.” You may be forced to go to a yard. For whatever parts you have to buy, your claim will still be depreciated, etc. But I don’t think the labor is involved in depreciation.
