Hey,

I purchased a 1973 33' Pearson over the winter and I am looking to my first season in a bigger boat! (I had a 27' Catalina years ago.)

My primary concern is getting a Zinc on the boat. There's not much room for one past the prop, but it looks like there might have been a prop nut zinc or acorn zinc. I purchased an acorn zinc that would fit if I took the rudder off to screw it on the end of the prop shaft (it's threaded) but I'm not willing to go that far for a zinc.

I cannot find anything in the stores or online that seems to be the correct one for this boat. I'm about to hit the water in a few weeks, so I might just have to cut the tip off the acorn zinc to allow me enough room to get it on the shaft. I hope this will work!

Now I have to figure out what all the lines go to and what each valve does. I only have a manual for the engine, and can't seem to find any wiring or piping diagrams around. If anyone has some insight for a relatively new sailor (I last sailed 20 years ago on the Catalina) I am all ears and would appreciate the feedback!

Thanks.
-OFFTO!

OFFTO,
I am not familiar with the P33 but I did check both the Pearsoninfo and the Pearson Current sites for any info on the shaft zinc. The only inquiries that I found were about the P35. That model has an aperture similar to the P33. The answers were that all were using "donut" zincs ahead of the prop. One owner said that he had to shave about 1/8 inch off the side to make it fit, another said he found a prop nut zinc that fit but did not give a maker.

It could be that a previous owner of your boat replaced the prop or the engine and the new configuration eliminated the space between the prop hub and the shaft exit from the cutlass bearing where a shaft zinc would have been placed. The original engine for your boat was an Atomic 4 and the prop was a two blade. If you have a replacement engine then the dimemsions are probably changed.

I suggest you check Rock Hall Railroad for a zinc that will fit, either behind the prop or on the prop nut.

As a side note, where in Rock Hall are you? We are at The Sailing Emporium. Come by after May 5 if you would like to talk about Pearsons.

This boat has the WesterBeke in it, so that's probably why there's nothing standard for it. I don't have any room between the prop and the motor on the shaft to put anything (it's about a 1/4" clearance or less) but at the end of the shaft there's a prop nut and another nut or extension that looks like it will take a 1" screw anode. I'll check out the railroad yard, I hadn't stopped by there. If nobody has it I'll just cut the end off the acorn anode and try to get it on the shaft without having to remove the rudder. I should be able to do that.
