You want vinylester resin as it is not porous when dry. Polyester resin is porous when dry. You are are water line Let the two layers of fiberglass dry and sand Lightly spray some gray paint in the sanded area if you think you have laid enough fiberglass look for any valleys. If no valleys, use lesser or lower grade sandpaper to get a smooth surfacing. Last sanding you should use wet and dry sandpaper.

I would suggest using Loc Tite two part epoxy to fill in the small holes and let dry for a day. Then used 400 grit wet sand paper for final smoothing. When done, call me as we need to discuss painting.

THE WATER BALLAST TANK LID IS. UNDERNEATH THAT WHITE OR CREAM COLORED FOAM. LEAVE THAT ALONE. KAPISH!

You may want to retab the floor to the hull at this point. Any questions, you have my contact information. Invest in a resin roller and acetone too

Hi Dave
Thanks a bunch. Don’t touch the foam, got it.

I will have to do some research for the right epoxy. I live in a smaller town, may have to order. I’m getting excited. Currently working on the backing plate. I Purchased some original JB Weld to glue it in.

Retab the floor. I’ll have to research that too. :)

I will be off line Wednesday and Thursday morning. Before doing that we need to talk. Did you find the part in the water or order it

Some great advice here. Steve, Can you please post final photos once the repair is complete and an update once you hit the water.

Absolutely I will. I have not done anything yet. A neighbour stopped by, he told me his dad is a fibreglass technician. He’s been repairing boats for 40 plus years. I’m going to let him help :)
The weather up here went to almost 40 degrees in the shade. Today is the first coolish day we’ve had. Too hot.

I have been shopping. I had to travel to a large town to visit paint and plastic ind. They sell all the resins but, they only sell the vinylester in 5 gallon pails for just over $500.00. I couldn’t do it. I left with unwaxed marine grade polyester resin. I decided to not use epoxy resin. Would have used vinylester of course but it’s not doable at that cost. Thoughts?

Polyester doesn’t have the adhesive strength of epoxy or the waterproof qualities of vinylester or epoxy. Having said that I’m sure you wouldn’t be the first person the make a repair like that with it. The unwaxed polyester won’t fully cure on its own. That can be helpful as you’re laying up layers of glass because you can just continue along without any sanding. The downside is that you’ll need some way to get the final layer to cure, often by adding one layer of waxed gelcoat or spraying it with PLA.

Thanks guys. Total boat has no info on vinylester and epoxy over polyester with a gel coat finish is said to be too soft. As a last resort, we have two large boat repair shops close to here. I will ask if they will sell me some vinylester resin.
Goindustrial.com is the store close to here. I have submitted a request for 1 litre of vinylester. This is suppose to be an easy fix lol :)

epoxy over polyester with a gel coat finish is said to be too soft.
Gelcoat is pretty brittle and will crack easily, nothing should go over gelcoat, but more gelcoat and in thin layers.

Epoxy is fine over polyester resin if prepared properly, i.e, clean, sand to 80 grit.

Gelcoat over epoxy works, if the epoxy is fully cured and the amine blush is removed and the surface sanded with 80 grit.

TotalBoat's parent company, Jamestown Distributors, does carry Vinylester resin, although it appears to available only in the gallon size.

Now I’m heading back to return the unwaxed and get waxed resin for the backing. I won’t be able to spray pva on the inside. Also, using waxed white gel coat.

Small amount of progress to report. The weather has cooled down so we got started. I had a good look underneath while sanding the bottom. A number of the scratches were just through the anti fouling paint. That said, I found a few more “hits” in the bottom. I will have to lift the boat off the trailer, yikes. There’s a healthy bump right on the left bunk.

The large repair in the front port side is almost done. Multiple layers of glass with vinyl-ester resin. Then two finish coats. We made a few more repairs along the way. More to go.

Looking for some advice re lifting. I'm hoping I can use just one sling on the front. If I hook the trailer up to the truck, block the back of the trailer and use one sling on the front to lift the nose. I can pivot the rear of the boat on the rear of the bunks. I only need say 12 to 20 inches clearance.
I do have a large steel spreader bar and 2 straps but no stands or anything to put it on once its up.

Any advice :)

@SteveHughessails

What I am concerned with is tilting one end. The weight on the end with the other end poses two problems. The hull on the trailer will indent the hull
And secondly the strap lifting the other end can slip off You will have damage. I have seen it happen.
I would be willing to talk with you. Send me a private message with your telephone number. The plans for the 23.5 came from me to Hunter Marine.

Thanks Dave
We shared the same concerns. I am happy to report that the lift went very well. Next time, I would use two straps and just lift it. It was very smooth. I ended up using two tires (1 on each side) under the bunks once it was up. Tomorrow I'm going to finish the paint stripe and a add a decal. We're hoping to put it in the water this week or next.

I was hoping for a, "good job mate". :)
The main lifting strap is only going to go one way, forward. I tied the main strap from going forward with the orange tie down. I figured I was golden?

Other than a really good cleaning and wax, done. :)
