New owner of a 1988 C30 Std. Rig., moved up from a C25. I'm having some basic repairs done on the boat so I can have a "repair starting point" (if one even exists on a boat!). Your comments are most welcome on anything I may have overlooked. Items done are: survey (above avg. cond.) & sea trial, bottom job, replaced: cutlass bearing, zincs, packing for stuffing box, oil, filters, belts, dutchman lines, checked bushing at top of Hood furler, checked sheaves, tightened steering cables, replaced worn hoses on diesel, rewired bilge pump to ABYC standards, checked topping lift for wear, all other systems appear "go". Let me know if there is a particular area to be aware of on C-30's that may be a common failure point. Many thanks and good sailing to you. Maryellen Behrmann s/v Island Time C-30 #5106

Check the shroud deck plates

Check to see if you have the upgraded shroud deck plates and cabin reinforcement backings. The deckplates should look like a upside-down U-Bolt, and the cabin backings should attach directly to the bulk heads as a reinforcement. Best of of luck with her !!! Rgds, -Chuck

Mast Step at Keel

I suggest inspecting the wooden mast step block at the bottom of the compression post at the keel for any softness/rot, along with any deck deflection under the mast itself at the deck step. Catalina has good spec sheets on repair if needed. Also check the alignment of the hanging locker doors -- if seriously out of alignment can indicate bulkheads have come adrift. Good luck! Also the Chainplates and Seacocks

Maryellen, A couple of more items to check, which may be okay, are where the chainplates attach to the bulkhead inside the cabin. See if the plywood bulkhead is solid and not with any dryrot. The seal on deck of the chainplates ages and can let small amounts of water seep in if not taken care of. Also, an '88 may not have the same thru-hull fitting method as our '79, but if it does, Catalina simply fiberglassed in a threaded bronze pipe into the hull and attached gate valves for whatever was plumbed. The pipe can work lose if you try to remove the gate valve for instance (inside can get real wet if in the water). Replace with bronze thru-hull fittings and ball-type seacock valves. Guess I'm showing "my ignorance" about model year improvements, but if your spreaders are not aluminum (probably are by '88), then make double sure the wooden ones don't have any rot - especially at the mast mount point. Question I have is where do you keep Island Time? On Lake Texoma or surrounding Metroplex lakes or down on the coast? If in the Galveston Bay area, come on

For Mike Turner

Mike, My hanging locker has actually split on the forward side. I've tried to inspect closer, but have not found anything specific. Any advise on what exactly I should be looking for?? Thx, -Chuck

Thanks!!

Appreciate all of the replies! I did not check the through hulls for type, and will see if I can get them replaced while Island Time is out of the water (should have thought of that one, but hey, it's why I asked all of you!). Spreaders are aluminum, hanging locker all in one nice solid piece, and chainplates appear to be ok. Island Time is at Texoma, but will move to Lake Lewisville, only so I can use the boat more frequently...would love to keep her on Texoma, but too far for now. Again, replies very much appreciated. Also check the fresh water impeller

I have an 88 C30 TR and had to replace mine last year after a breakdown at sea. First time it was replaced ever. Not fun to deal with unless you are at the dock. If you do replace it, lubricate with some marine grease. My instructions suggested vegetable oil but I also had to replace it again this year, I think because of lubrication. Make sure it is grease that does not break down in water. Great boat though....I love it.

Re: Impeller

New impeller was installed last week. The service tech told me to replace it every year, although most people don't. He said the worst was if it broke apart, you have to chase down all of the missing bits in the system. Mentioned using either Liquid Joy (you know it's working when you get the "Lawrence Welk Bubbles" effect aft) or white lithium grease (effective not near as festive)for lubrication. Appreciate your email.

Strut Bolts

Check where your fuel tank is installed..be sure the tank is not touching the top of the strut bolts. I have a 89 C 30 and developed a fuel leak when the strutt bolts rubbed through the bottom of the tank....also caused a stutt bolt to corrode and start leaking water ...Was a big mess and very expensive to repair. Use a mirror and flashlight and inspect under your fuel tank for any evidince of this problem
