Line organizers for single handing

Lines for jib and main halyards as well as a downhaul for the jib, topping lift and reefing lines can all be routed back to the cockpit via blocks and kept cleated off and organized with a device I've seen referred to as a rope clutch (I think). Probably more common on larger boats rigged for single handing. Not sure where I'd put one on our H23's. The cabin top in front of the slider isn't very stout and not much easier to reach than just stepping up to the mast. The space just outside of the slider on either side is not very wide. On my boat, PO rigged some turning blocks near the base of the mast and winches on either side of the cabin top near the companionway to help with single handing, but no line organizer. So, I do have access to my lines either at the mast or in the cockpit, but I'll confess, it often looks like spaghetti either way. If I want to take advantage of my marinas services, I'll need to get hauled in the next week to 10 days. It has put me in a serious funk and might explain why I've posted so much in the last several days. (in addition to the reality of wretched weather for most of 3 weeks now)

Tenderness

Denise, the 23 isn't the only tender boat Huner made. Took the crew I race with out on my H34 yesterday and found out just how much headsail will cause a round-up with a full main when a gust exceeds 20 knots! Once we rolled the headsail back up, we were very comfortable sailing broad reaches with the full main and only occasional heavy weather helm. It was a glorious day as you found out too! Reef early and keep the boat upright. If you were able to handle yesterday's winds, you'll do fine as you improve your skills. Come on down to the Chesapeake--a one knot current is about as bad as it gets (never not mind the wind, though)!

One out of four tries for me :(

Denise, You should feel lucky! I've been out on my 23 four times now on the Columbia, and only once did we have more than 3 knots of wind. That was the day I "test drove" her and since it's been, "well let's practise anchoring, dock maneuvers" and so on. Good stuff to know, but I wanted to sail!! Oh well, I putt-putted her up river to the take out Saturday and got her onto the trailer just fine. At least I can steer :) Un-stepping the mast wasn't too much trouble. Just make sure you loosen up all the shroud turnbuckles 5-6 full turns before you start. I also ran the top end of the jib halyard thru a block on the bow end of the anchor locker for handling the weight of the mast, easing it down slowly. Sounds like you got the drive to get good. I can't wait till spring!

Denise - CDI

Hey Denise - check out the used gear section of this site, you might save a few $ on the FF from CDI. Hope I didn't get in trouble posting this, but I'm not the seller and I don't see you in the directory. Was considering it myself, but not ready to pull the trigger. mm

*cry last sail today, shes on the dry

well... I got a last sail in today! dumb to try but I went south against the tide and the wind which was under 5mph I think. Burlington Island blocks most of the wind too. But I kept trying to tack. I almost made it to the Burlinton Bristol Bridge too! But! It was just about dark and the wind quit completely! GRRR! Had to motor back to dock! then the club guys let me try to do most of stuff to get my trailer down the ramp with my van, new hitch and all. duh.. I was mortified! Forgot to get the pin THROUGH the hitch that goes in the receiver. plop! thank heaven for new safety chains! seems my van is too low softly sprung even with the 4" riser on the hitch. Oh well. by spring I hope to have the trailer refit with new axle, wheels, brakes etc. frayed nerves and all my boat is parked where she was last month! things ! learned today 1- "I can do this" doesn't mean you can!' 2 - tacking south in light winds blowing north with the tide is dumb. 3- at least I can back up the darn trailer! left is right.. right is left... 4-the motor mount is ready to tear itself off the transom. (will fix that real soon!) Anyway, time to think about all the little things I want to do the boat over the winter. Tune in often to see how I'm doing! and thank you all for the help and advice! Hey Denise

Great ending story! The last sail is always the worst, even if its the best. Pulled my boat last weekend, after 2 weeks of rain, I figured it was done, over. It was the last weekend we could have the boats in. The day I pulled, it was beautiful, went for short sail, and pulled her out, over, done. Very sad day! Like most though, our thoughts will be on sailing throughout the winter, and thank goodness for this site! Keep us posted, George

thanks George!

i'm planning on reffiting the trailer with new brakes, lines, wiring, etc. I also want to drop the keel (err lift boat rather( and rebed it this winter. seems like it's easy enough with the help from all my new friends at the club. I may paint the hull in the spring, not sure yet however. take care!
