New Name

Hi Everyone...
I just recently purchased a beautiful new boat, she is a glossy white fiberglass sailboat. The previous owner had named her after his family members. Now it was a beautiful name for him, but it just doesn't fit my style. So, logically, I wanted to re-name the boat.
I, ever so carefully, removed the current name and wet sanded the gel coat and then polished and buffed the gelcoat, however there is still a faded yellow shaddow of the previous name. How do I get rid of this without eating through the gelcoat?
I would not consider myself an expert boat mechanic, so the easier the solution, the better.

The gelcoat may fade over time, but it won't be anytime soon.

That old name will fade in a year or two to the point you can't see it easily. to the discerning eye, it will always be there. Consider it the soul of the boat before you got it. Be sure to use the necessary name change ceremony.

Higgs is absolutely correct. The old name will NEVER fade away unless your namechanging ceremony is properly executed. You do not want to mess with Neptune! Liberal amounts of Mount Gay worked well in our situation, though you may find something else local to Illinois (corn liquor?) may be just as good. We used rubbing compound (Finesse-it is a bit less rough than the standard stuff in the wide, short can) to remove the old name.

This is a little involved, but I can make due with a condensed version of it.
I won't post the new name until after the ceremony, according to the instructions...bad luck an all.

Renaming ceremony

I was lucky enough to buy a 1980 sailboat from a woman who never gave it a name. I did sail her backwards the first outing just in case. It was more like drift her backwards, but it was the best I could do.
