I recently purchased a 73 oday mariner. THe owner reports it had not been in water for 10 years or so. The previous owner showed me the thru hull cockpit drain was broken and this was the reason the boat had water in it. I bought it assuming this was the case. After bailing the boat, water continues to puddle inside the boat(It is sitting on a trailer out of the water!) It has not rained for a number of days so it is not rain water. Looking inside there is a trickle of water coming from the transom area. Also more water is pooling where the mast support is located. The hull appears solid as does the deck, except for some flexing forward of the cabin. Could there be water in the foam floatation? Or a worse case scenario? Also it appears that there was water leaking though the deck to hull joint. I have removed the rubber rub rail but I am hesitatn to remove the hard platic liner that is stapled through. What is the best way to reseal the hull to deck joint? THere are other problems (centerboard needs refinishing) and cosmetic issues but these are the ones that are starting to make me nervous. Any help is appreciated.

Gunwale strip
Marc, I'm not sure what you have for a gunwale strip on the Mariner, but the gunwale strip on my O'Day 222 has a rubber that fits into an aluminum molding that is screwed to the deck/hull joint around the boat. I was able to take the rubber out of the gunwale strip by removing the two screws that go through the rubber in the stern of the boat. Then I removed the Port side rubber as far as where I came to a joint where the Aluminum moldings come together, about half way around the boat. Then I unscrewed the gunwale strip, cleaned the area and re caulked the area with a Polysulfide boat caulk. 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant Fast Cure 4000 UV is a good boat caulking for this. You'll probably need a large tube to do the whole gunwale strip. Small tubes can be bought at Wal-Mart cheaper than West Marine. Anyway, after I caulked this area, I re-installed the gunwale strip and rubber. Then I removed the rubber on the Starboard side along with that gunwale strip, and did the rest of it. I really don't know what to tell you about the other leaks. I'm just not that familiar with the Mariners and how they are put together, but you could call Rudy Nickerson of D & R Marine in Assonet Ma. (508) 644-3002.
