New main sail too tall. Now what?

If North used the non-furling length ...
  • Was the boat available with a traditional sail?
  • If yes, did the order state that it was for a furling sail? It surely must have, from the lack of battens and hollow leach. Thus, they knew. The sail is obviously designed for furling.
Good luck. It sounds like a good case.
NS knew it was a RF main. It has the correct UV cover and outhaul sheave.

The boat was also available with a traditional mail. I would have preferred that.

I'm speculating that NS used the luff measure for a traditional main and not a RF main like they should have. It never crossed my mind.

As for the troubles with furling, that old sail has a lot of positive roach and what looks like removed reinforcement points for batten pockets (pictures are blurry at that level of zoom). Are you sure the old sail was originally built for a furler and not the standard sail with the battens and pockets removed and stuck on the furler? If the latter, then I definitely would expect furling issues.

The sail was originally equipped with vertical battens. The pockets were not removed. I used the battens. I don't remember the sail ever hanging up at the battens, seems like it was always between them.

I just measured the main sail luff at 420 inches. The new sail is 425 inches.

I'm guessing that NS used the luff dimensions for a traditional main, not a roller furling main. Live and learn.

I'm sure North Sail will make it right.
