I am thinking of buying a home in New Jersey, and my biggest concern is the availability of good sailing and destination spots, as the Great South Bay has. Does anyone have any experience or opinions to share on sailing in New Jersey?

That is where I learned to sail

Sailing in New Jersey? Are you kidding? I learned to sail at the Jersey shore on Barnegat Bay and recall that it was fantastic. Some of the best sailing anywhere! The entire shoreline is full of huge bays with nice wind. The only problem is that it is seasonal. Not too nice in the winter. When I moved to Florida 20 years ago, I had to be near the water. Here I can sail all year...we are just now entering perfect sailing weather while the northerners are hauling their boats out.

North or South Jersey

I keep my Catalina 27 at the South Jersey shore. I use Hereford Inlet for ocean access (in good weather--in bad weather, I use Cape May Inlet) and do most of my sailing up and down the beach, with occasional back bay runs up and down the ICW. Ocean sailing is the better option, as our back bays are pretty limited in depth. There are several South Jersey destinations that are good for overnight trips: Atlantic City, Cape May, Lewes, DE, and Ocean City MD.

Weekend Getaways

I guess my actual question was, does New Jersey have the weekend getaway spots that the Great South Bay does, like Sailors Haven, Atlantique, Ocean Bay Park, etc....
