Just installed, compact bowl, manual operation. Bowl fills on wet mode, will not empty itself and pump gets hard to push. What am I missing?

Are you sure the selector switch has been moved ALL the way to the dry position? If not, that's the explanation for inability to empty the bowl and hard pumping.

"Y" valve position to allow flow to holding tank? Full holding tank? Some blockage in lines to "Y" valve or to holding tank? Proceed with caution!

Yep, if the handle gets hard to push the selector switch is not all the way over to dry mode.

+1. Move the selector over to wet and back, or just push it to dry as you push down the handle. I have to do that once a weekend maybe, but it shouldn't have to work that way. Maybe the inside valve is not installed properly?

Had a couple of these before, selector seems to work, snaps properly each way.

ok, here's what happened. My 1980 Hunter 37C had it's original 5100 Imperial unit. we'd been using for several months, had it pumped out a couple weeks ago after it had been hard to flush for a couple days. then a week ago it just froze. Handle wouldn't stay up and very hard to move at all. Got tired of looking at it, bought a new Jabsco in the carton and installed it. Waste line kinda hard to relocate so heated it with a heat gun and successfully connected it. Water inlet as well (not heat required). Worked valve to allow water to fill bowl, switched it to empty and pumped it out... getting hard to pump again. Now it too is almost stuck, sucks air in fill mode.
When I disconnected the waste line from the old Imperial, it dumped a couple gallons of clear water, then stopped, before I reconnected it to the Jabsco.
That's as far as I've got.

Would opening the waste pump-out relieve that?
Not if the hose reaches to the bottom of a full tank. You should be able to run a hose INTO the vent. If it's blocked, you will get your feet wet and know what the problem is.

Presuming nothing is wrong with a new toilet, you have a blocked holding tank vent.
Try unscrewing the deck pumpout cap. That should allow SOME improvement, but you'd still have a problem. Most likely problem is the vent at the hull, the screen is cloggged with... stuff.

Pulled the vent hose at the tank and was able to clear air outward through it, didn't try the other way, through the elbow fitting, seemed open but didn't try to force air through it.

Also, after I had heated the waste hose, the room area around the Jabsco smelled of something burnt, but found nothing else and the solar vents cleared the air.

The vent thru-hull--the end you didn't check--is the most likely place for a vent line blockage. Clean it out using a screwdriver blade, ice pick or whatever works. Then replace the vent thru-hull with a plain ol' open "bulkhead" or "mushroom" thru-hull that you can stick a hose nozzle up against and backflush the vent line every time you wash the boat and/or pump out to prevent any more vent line blocks.

Conclusion: The waste hose was impacted at the holding tank. Must have built up over time and finally failed. Going thru the other symptoms first was the right thing to do. It works great now and the Imperial had long since seen better days.
Thanks to Peggy and all who helped.
