Hello Everyone, I am considering changing the old wire/rope halayards to rope only. I have not been to the top of the mast yet to check if the halyard sheaves need to be changed. Does anyone know if I need to replace the sheaves or are they OK for the larger diameter rope halyard??? I have a 1980 C30 TRBS. Thanks, Paul

Leave the sheaves.

There's no need to change them unless they're damaged....

Replace the sheaves

The sheaves for wire have a much narrower groove than rope sheaves. Have a look at a previous discussion at the web address below

Same sheave then??

Thanks for the input. It appears that it "maybe" OK to use the same sheaves according to some previous responses. This would be great since I have no desire at this time to perform the acrobatics you described and am not ready to pull the boat and drop the mast. I will most likely go up to the top for a quick inspection and see what I've got. Hopefully I'll have enough grove for a rope halyard. Paul

I didn't

Replaced my rope/wire halyards a few years back but left the old sheaves. I haven't had any problems so far. The only thing to watch for is chafe since the groove is smaller than the diameter of the line. LaDonna

No problem

Paul, I replaced the wire halyards on my 84 c-30 to all line last year and have had no problems. My rigger said that the sheaves were fine. Best

another solution....

Rather than changing the sheaves, I replaced the wire to rope halyards with "tapered" ones. Hi-tech core with polyester cover on the area handled for thickness. I built mine, but you can have them made.. Check the website below for some good info. You can call the staff at Annapolis Performance Sailing for some very courteous and expert advice.
