Grow up and fly the proper colors. That is an daft thing for you to fly. No matter how you "feel" about any current or past political climate, do what is right as an American and don't be an embarrassment to sailors.

There was more after this sentence, but Kermit, I'm surprised you would have not just stopped there. Ok you saw what, again?

I saw a hot chick while at a winery near Austin, TX. What came after that was trying not to get caught staring. My wife, who was sitting next to me, knew I was admiring the tatoo. The hot chick’s husband, on the other hand, might not have been so understanding.

She would not have put it there if she did not want anyone to look at it.
If your wife were to catch you just tell her "That nice tat would look better on you babe".

Ah yes. But she was a hot chick, tatoo or no tatoo. I had to look away. Self-preservation. If her husband hadn’t beat me up my wife would have.

I figure that whenever someone spends money to decorate or enhance their body, they WANT you to look at it. It's what a businessperson would call 'Return On Investment'.

The problem with tattoos as marketing tools is how often one misses the target audience.

It would also be a mistake to mention how much more room there might be for the tat

How appropriate that the hijack emogi is a pirate.

Sorry Simon,
For those who don't like the idea of perpetuating the romantic image of the pirates of old, I'm sorry. You have missed out on some good movies and a great ride at Disney World.

Simon, the flag is cool. Whatever a captain might have been or became on either side of his privateer days, a privateer is not a pirate. What you don't want to fly is the flag of a modern Somali pirate. That would be in bad taste. Oh right, modern pirates don't fly flags.
In this day and age, a jolly roger is just a symbol of the romantic image of a rogue sailor. Real piracy has very little association with that flag. Don't believe me, just attend Gasperilla Day in Tampa.

@Kermit , were you looking specifically to get beaten up that night? :)

I get it, to each his own. But I never ever want to be like these people, ever. Nothing about this says sailing to me.

Good pirate; bad pirate?
Well, if it were not for privateer/pirate Jean Laffite, we would be flying the British ensign today. Andrew Jackson would have been beaten by the Brits at the culmination of the war of 1812 in the “Battle of New Orleans.” Jackson admitted that fact. He didn’t have the manpower, flints, and gun powder; nor did he have the local knowledge to plan defenses. Laffite supplied all of the above and his men manned 2-3 batteries during the actual battle. His help enabled Jackson to strike a decisive blow to a far superior British army.
So, Simon, fly whatever novelty flag or club burgee that you like; however, always under the respectful position of the US Ensign.

Laffite's direct descendants live two houses down from me. Pierre use to teach at the local high school. He passed away a few years ago, but the family lives on. A very nice guy. Not a pirate.

Thank you, everyone, for your advice! The flag is too large to be flown from my vessel, so I will probably not go through with it. I've decided to add it to my collection hanging in my closet, but no longer plan to fly it from my vessel. I will be flying the U.S. Flag from the backstay as I've always done, and plan to fly our Sea Scout Ship flag on a side halyard rigged next to the starboard shrouds.

Don't think it would have made a difference as the "Battle of New Orleans" was only a practice battle fought after the peace was signed. Poor communications back in the day.
