I just purchased a 1983 C27. My wife would like to update the custion covers. The interior is of the settie variety. Any ideas on what this might cost? Is there a location that specializes in this or is a local business best?

I replaced all 11 cushions, both foam and covers, for $1100 CDN two years ago(dinete version). I brought the originals to a place called the Foam Shop. They copied them in new foam and had a place they worked with make up new covers from material I picked out. They came out quite well. Paul 1974 Catalina 27

I bought a Catalina 36 last fall with absolutely no cushions (just the old cut up covers). I got bids from local shops ranging from $2,000 to $8,000. I went with the $2,000 and got a great job (checked some of their stuff and references first).

A couple of years ago, I had a local shop replace the foam for our Catalina 30 -- I can't remember the cost. This year my wife sewed up new covers -- $200 worth of material on sale. To simplify things a bit, she skipped the zippers and hand-basted the covers on the cushions. You almost never remove them anyway and it's no big deal to snip the threads to take them off and re-bast to put them on. Chances are, if you need to do so, it would only be one cushion anyway.

I found it much cheaper to buy the material at a discount fabric outlet, then bring the materials to a shop to do the labor, rather than have it done at a boat upolstry shop, where they charge you a high price for the materials(I found double). I was quoted $600 to replace the two cushions and install new fabric on the port berth. They were missing when I bought the boat. My wife and I traced and cut the paterns on some shipping wrapping paper, took it to a fabric outlet and they cut the foam to our pattern and sold us matching fabric for $9/yard and with the foam and batting the total material cost was $179, compared to the $400 materials quote from the boat upolstry shop. We needed 5-yards for the port berth, the rest of the cost was the foam-$200. The boat upolstry shop that gave us the estimate wanted $30-40 yards for similar fabric. Then the fabric store gave us a list of auto/boat upolstry shops and the first one I called is doing it this week for $150. So the total cost was about $320 or halve the cost. So that gives you and idea on labor($150 for the port berth). I would guess about $600 labor for the entire Catalina 27 fabric replacement labor, and the rest of the cost is fabric. I live in San Diego, near Mexico so labor is probably a bit cheaper here. In any case I think the best thing to do is start with a discount fabric store and get as much info from them as possible by showing them a sample of you old cushions, then shop around for the best labor rate once you have all the materials and can show/tell them exacly what you want done.

I just had to get estimates for my C27 (Dinette, has the two facing settee’s with the dinette table in-between on the starboard side, I'm not sure what you mean by settie.) Anyway, I have 10 cushions, two in the forward V-berth, four for the dinette settee’s, one large port settee (bottom and backrest,) and two 1/4 berth (I have the inboard A-4) and the estimates, (with foam,) around here, (central Tex... Lake Texoma,) were from $3,500. to $2,200. so far. But I contacted Catalina Direct and they can get me the factory cushions w/foam, made by the same guys who are currently outfitting the new Catalina’s, for $1,500.w/foam and including shipping. w/o foam, it's about $1,050. including shipping. The only drawback to getting them from Catalina Direct is that they only offer two colors, the blue, and the green that is currently going into the new Catalina’s. The reason I mention the prices with and without foam is because the shops around here are saying their costs for foam have increased 400% over the last 5 yrs. Both colors offered by C/D are very nice and good fabric too so I think I'm going with them unless I get a great bid from someone around here in a material that my wife can't live without. I have a '76 Catalina 27. The cushions have gotten ratty and mildewy over the years so it is time for replacement. The quoted costs generaly came in from $1,100 to 1,500. Both are more than I wanted to spend, so my wife and I looked into getting the materials wholesale and having an upholstery shop put it all together. We are not finished but I got the foam for free (it is good, high quality foam) from a business associate and have found material at an auto upholstery shop for about $7-8 per yard. Again, it is good material. The quotes for assembling it are around $3-400 and lower if I cut the foam, which is easy with an electric knife. One note, stay away from any foam or material that says "marine" in front of it. It is not needed inside the cabin and doubles or triples the price. Tom

I finished my cushions this past winter. I always wanted new ones but did not want to spend the $$MONEY. Here is a photo of the finished results. Most of the foam was in great shape so I only replaced 2. GO AHEAD JUST DO IT!!

Try Catalina. They had the best price for a complete cushion set for the C-30. Upholstery is surprisingly expensive. The prices you have been quoted are more or less normal. John
