New cushions for my 23

About 4 weeks ago I installed my new cushions, I had them locally made from Sunbrella fabric #56080 (Milano Cobalt) with 4" mattress foam.
I generated scale drawings in CAD and made full scale cardboard patterns, they all fitted beautifully.
A while ago I read in a magazine of someone with an O'Day 23 who converted his sleeping arrangement to a double bed by joining the side berths together.
I am still looking for that magazine so that I can acknowledge him because I liked the idea and have copied him.
As you can see in the pics, I added two wood strips that support three boards that support the back cushions making a huge bed that could sleep three adults across with lots of length. Phew!!!
The wife and I tried it out for four nights at the Toronto Marina and we are very pleased, it is so comfortable on the 4" mattress foam.
I made the foam in the V berth three inches because we mostly use it for storage.

I like that! You did an excellent job. One of my friends in the YC just bought an 83 O'Day 23 with a roller trailer.

I was tickled pink when he asked me if I wanted him to bring it up to the dock for me to board and check out.

What a beautiful boat that 23 is! I like the O'Day 23 now, even better than the stock O'Day 222s. His boat has the anchor locker on the bow which I think is great on any boat.
He had a lot of gear in the V birth section and I didn't get a chance to go into it to see if it's as roomy as my 222. The V birth on my boat is my favorite sleeping area. The 23 seems to have wider quarter births than the 222 though.

I love the design and colors of your cushions. This is something that I'd like to do to my boat. In fact, I had talked about it on this forum and was going to have it done until I came down with this illness. Perhaps next year if the good Lord is willing.

Thanks Joe, The 23 is a sharp looking boat, before I purchased mine I was looking in our marina to go a little bigger and that's when I saw an '81 23, it was beautiful and I new I had to have one, I never even looked at anything else.
I hope things go very well with you Joe, we have to keep going as long as we can.
I have a pacemaker an am going in soon for a biopsy on my lung....getting old sucks.

MAN, THAT LOOKS EXTRA SHARP!!!!!!!!!!
did you remove the original seat backs/shelves? and if so did they seem to be adding any strength to the hull sides? I have never really looked at mine closely.

Thanks John. It's true about getting old. It's not what it's cracked up to be. Of course, I wouldn't trade my retirement to go back to work but I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too. I guess if we live long enough we're bound to get something. Good luck!

My original seat back mounts were just plywood cut to the curvature of the hull and had back cushions about 8" deep attached to them, I tossed them out in favour of full depth cushions that double as the double bed mattress.
The original mountings were never designed to be structural to the hull so they can be safely eliminated.

Looks great. Amazing how much more room you have inside on the 23 vs the 22. I guess size does matter.

The cool thing about technodad's removal of the original seat back is that it makes it more comfortable to sit on the settee. I had the seat back on one side out of mine and leaned back against the extra cushion. It was really nice.

Ahoy there,, Technodad!
First of all I just want to say that you did an excellent job and I like what you did in the cabin of that boat.
I noticed that you keep an oar in the V birth birth section of your boat. Have you ever thought of cutting a small section out of your rear Starboard bulkhead? I'm referring to the narrow piece that fits up into the inside combing.

I can't figure out how to copy and paste on my son Tim's tablet, so I'll give you some directions on where to go to get to the picture album in '' my Profile'' on this site
Just click on to my name '' Trinkka'' which will take you to '' My Profile''.

Then look for my picture album on the right hand side of the page. Click on the album entitled, '' New mods in the cabin''. My rear bulkhead is made of plywood and I think your bulkhead might be Fiberglass. Check it out John and let me know what you think.

The reason I point this out to you is because there's a lot of useful space behind that rear bulkhead for storing a 6.5' Whisker pole, a 12' telescopic boat, and a fishing pole. If you enter my cabin, you wouldn't even know that there was a Whisker pole hiding behind that companionway bulkhead. You can see my boat hook which is very accessable from the cockpit.
I don't know, but I liked it so much that I named it,--The mother of all mods'' because it was so easy to do.

Hey Trinkka,
Just getting around to answering your post.
Thanks for the info on storing the oar. I looked at your pic's however I can't do that because there is the built in cockpit ice box / cooler in the starboard side seating and the port side is short because of the lazerette.
Good try anyway.

Techno, he is talking about the area behind the back of the seat not under the bottom. Should be plenty of room there to do as he did.

I believe you can order them from this site. Folks that due auto interiors and a host of other folks can make them up for you as well.
