this guy hit the nail on the head. Join a sailingn club and meet people. Sail of different boat until you know what your looking for. It is like selecting a mate. Some people do it every two years and other stick with what they have. Better to pick the right boat the first time!PS: Unless you have load of time to spend working on your boat don't consider wood!

you can go with wood if....

you are filthy rich, and can hire someone to work on it, and then you can show it off to everyone on how great it looks, and what a great boater you are.......and have everyone laughing behind your back.There are some boaters who spends a great deal of their own time working on their own wooden boat, with very impressive results. But for most boaters, plastic is better.

Wood? nope

In the mid 1960's, my father bought a 1953 ChrisCraft plywood 25' cruiser. Not too much maintainence, but a poor handling vessel. in 1966 he traded that boat and a couple of grand for a 1932 Marblehead sport fisherman. I can still hear and smell those spring weekends, and there were many of them, tapping home okum and using pine tar on every seam. Don't do that! But man she was seaworthy as they come.I own an '88 O'Day 240, and would like to move up to a late 80's O'Day 31' later. The 80's O'Days were built by Pearson, and are very nice.Take your time, there are many boats out there. Good winds,Eric

Try lookin at this boat, a month ago they

were asking $23,900 now down to $15,900 and looks like maybe even less. FG hull but enough wood to keep you busy for a long time & these boats have quite a few people that like them.

Just went over the winter to-do list.replace laminate on walls in front head (damaged and part missing)replace holding tank (too small and smelly)replace all head hoses (29 years old)install new diesel fuel tank (non-existant)replace all diesel lines ((old) install water tank (non-existant)replace all dark plexiglass (glazed)rechrome winches (chrome missing)screw hinges to floor in salon (danger)fix leak in starboard bilge (danger)replace or reglue laminate in galley (function)repair damage to bowsprit (function)replace bobstay (damaged)check rudder for play (function)replace fixed VHF (29 year old model)install cd player/radio (have it)change stove to propane (personal preference)repair/replace interior wood damge (looks)And this is on a plastic classic. I'd hate to add wood hull repairs to the list!
