Then maybe make another run outside down to North Carolina and come back up. If you have run into any problems, then you can come back up inside the ditch and get back up the bay to Annapolis. Then, you may be ready to run up to Maine and back. Do you plan on shooting across to England, or over to Lisbon and then up the coast to the UK? Running across from the mouth of the Bay to Bermuda, Azores and Cannaries at least gives you a few spots to pull in and rest, replinish your rum supply and get support if need be.

I plan to sail a straight shot over to England to save a little bit of time. I picked the grand soleil for many reasons but one is it has big water fuel and waste tanks so I feel comfortable with that choice. The boat has a very strong hull as well, the core is a galvanized steel grid which is bolted to the keel, obviously helping distribute the stress. It also uses vacuum bagging, vinylester e glass composite that inside holds a foam core. So after I work out the kinks I feel safe with doingthe journey on that boat. I think though that I will do quite a bit of testing on the bay the eventually go up to Maine, hopefully it will all work out well enough.

I do plan to intentionally take her out in a storm on the bay with full crew, so we can learn what to do when a storm hits us out in open ocean, and anything does go wrong, your never far from help.

A storm in the bay is a whole world different from an ocean storm. In the bay you never have more than 20 miles of sea room. The bay is shallow so the waves are steep. I would plan to sail from one of the capes to Montock and back to get some real sea time and not be too far from help. Befor you leave the dock locate each and every seacock and make certain that they work and that they have proper hose clamps and soft wood plugs. make certain that your manual and electric bilge pumps work. Treat this entire venture as if the entire world is conspiring to kill you and sink your boat. Yes you will have a new boat and insurance and when you are bobbing around in a pfd and the sharks are getting close show them your insurance card.

I find it hard to imagine that for all of the years you have been sailing including a 2 month passage from Maryland to British Columbia that you have not weathered many storms afloat. That is more than 6500 nutical miles. The atlantic is only 2800 miles it should be a walk in the park.

This is also a completely different crew and we need to know what everyone of us is going to do. In a storm we need to know how everyone is going to act and have a plan in place before a storm hits. You should know every boat and everyone is different.

I would love for you to know that Victoria was the only place we stayed. U seem to forget we were coastal sailing most of the time.

I would be most interested in learning how you were able to sail so far so fast if you were coastal sailing and I presume stopping now and then.

It would be wise to do a shakedown cruise in US coastal waters before you attempt to cross the ocean. I think sailing out of Delaware Bay will allow you to pick up favorable currents for the crossing.

Sounds like it is going to be a great experience. I lived in the Acores for 3 years. Some of the people on sailboats came into Praia Bay looking like they had been inches close to death. No doubt it can get very hairy crossing the big pond.

Thank you. It's good to know some people are glad for others rather than full of jealousy. Any way I've never been to Acores, but have heard its a beutiful place. Your a lucky guy the life there has to be fantastic?
