Phil, I don't see a shaft and prop. Do you know if the new 40 is power by a fixed or pivoting saildrive?

Len....Thanks for the picture. Pretty cool looking design. Now if that sail drive was retractable, you could have two fully rotatable and retractable hydraulic units one at stern and one at bow.:yeah:

SailDrive?

Wonder what's up with the sail drives? I would think that perhaps the advantages of vibration, drag and lower cost might work out well for those who haul annually, but for those of us who haul every three to four years, it would seem a stretch for maintenance. I understand that bottom paint with copper isn't recommended for the hull either, a potential issue itself as to the frequency of haul outs.

I understand that a good chunk of the world relies on saildrives so I'm probably missing something. No doubt the marketing people looked at this carefully, but I know I'm very shy about them.

One of the good things about saildrive is that they are more efficient in that the direction of the thrust is parallel to the direction travelled. On our prop shaft boats the prop shaft necessarily is on an angle that drives the boat up. Also no packing gland. A few weeks ago I had an opportunity to deliver both the new Barvaria 46 and Barvaria 50 between the Newport boat show and Mystic where the new dealership is based. Both boats employ saildrives. Both boats handeled very well under power and turned effectively on a dime. Don't know how much was attributable to the saildrive but the engines were extremely quiet. In fact from the helm you had to look at the RPM gauge to make sure the engine was running.

From the acceptance of change, I equate the evolution of the shaft to the sail drive as was rear wheel drive to front wheel drive. Each has its own pros and cons. Standard transmission to automatic transmission is another car related example. Hanked on sails vs furled sails, for sailboats. Some folks will accept the new immediately; some will slowly come around; other will never accept the change, for good and for bad.
I fully agree that there is more cost involved with the ownership of a Hunter sail drive sailboat. However, if the manufacturer ZF (previously Hurth) designed the SD10 sail drive such that at 250 hours or one year the leg oil could be changed in the water, there would be no need to haul the boat any more than one would have in the past. There are a number of sail drives on the market that can do just that. Don’t get me wrong, IMHO the SD20 is the best or is up there with the best. Zincs can still be changed by a diver. And copper bottom paint can still be used on the hull, albeit not on the sail drive leg.

Hello Below, Thanks for that post. I know you have been successful in dealing with the "issues" on your new boat, and congratulate you on persevering to your satisfaction, and that you have a good dealer. Too bad GreggL doesn't have your dealer! :)

Many of us will submit opinions and many of us feel that what we have is usually the best. Why? 'Cuz we've learned to live with it and deal with it. Many of us, perhaps, make the "mistake" of saying "What you have is not good for these reasons."

I applaud you for make some comparisons. However, I disagree with all of them.

Why?

Because the basic premise of comparing roller furling, and automatic transmsissions relates, in my opinion, in no way to the comparison of a stern tube and stuffing box with a saildrive.

Again, why?

Because (my opinion only) the comparison should be between

--- standard stuffing box
and
--- PSS shaft seal
and
--- saildrive

The reason is that I think all of us can agree that your analogy includes IMPROVEMENTS to each type of item you are comparing.

In the saildrive case, however, what one needs to do is to compare the three different types of connections between the engine and the propeller.

The stuffing box is simple and can be repaired in the water, no haulout needed.

The PSS, if it fails, requires a haulout.

The saildrive requires not only a haulout, but a regular haulout with certain predetermined times, or IT WILL FAIL. Perhaps catastrophically.

If, however, care is taken to haul the boat (which many of us do a LOT less regularly than the saildrive requires), then you should be fine.

The comparison is the extra haulout and making sure you keep an eye on it.

Good luck, it works, and we hope it works with you. I'm with Rick in my "feeling" about it, but I'm just an old geezer who knows how the repack his stuffing box! :):):)

Good luck, nice, new boat.

Have fun.

Why?

Why is there a need for a second head forward? Especially, on the two stateroom model. Removing the second head would allow for a larger cabin and perhaps a better berth than the aft one.

Where do I put my outboard and outboard engine lift? Reports I have read cite very limited storage space in cockpit lockers, both heads are confining, you cannot prop yourself up to read in the aft cabin and they haven't found a spot to install the optional generator! The interior looks like a 33/36, lacks the warmth of a 39 and the bigger boats with the salon panneling. Are they still using $54 Sherwood raw water strainers for the engine?
The beam specs are incorrect on Hunter's website. Still no pics! Great launch, much ado about nothing. Hunter hasn't changed. Same old, same old.
This boat should have been delayed. Don't they talk to boat owners? Some of us actually go cruising!

Thoughts on new Hunter 40 at boat show

Attended Annapolis boat show for first time. I was very excited to see the new 40 at the show. As someone who has owned 6 hunters over the past 26 years, and currently live aboard a 456, I just can't help but suggest that this boat does not move the brand forward. The fabric or whatever they were using on the bulkheads and doors, really was a disappointment. Maybe I'm just getting too old and that look appeals to the younger generation, but this was the first time a hunter interior dissapointed me. The countertops looked cheap, some kind of white plastic instead of the corian or simulated granite they have used for years. I liked the blue hull with gold trim but the interior was a huge letdown. Anyone else see the boat and thought it was a improvement or a step backwards?

Ps I do like he chine in the hull.

above deck

Any thoughts on the above deck fit-out - is the new solid bimini workable? -looks strange to me.

What is the cockpit space like and storage?

And forward visibility / upward especially mainsail visibility?

Thanks for the comments so far

Phil.... I do not do malls and I do not do face book. So how do I and others like me see pictures?;)
The picture Hellobellow posted above is the only picture from Facebook or the malls.

Only other pics I have found so far are the specs from Hunter and pics on Yachtworld.
