When I bought our 1996 Catalina 28 last year, it came with a 14 pound danforth type anchor, which does not sit well on the factory-installed bow roller. I purchased a 14 lb Kingston Quick-Set plow type, and tried it out on the roller; it sits well but scrapes the starboard side of the topsides, just at the bow. I don't really want to replace the roller, and I'm thinking of going to a 22 lb Claw or Bruce anchor as an alternative; from what I could see at the West Marine store, they will sit ok on my roller but rock side to side a bit. Any suggestions?

Bruce anchor

Hi Nick: I am sold on the Bruce/Claw style anchor. I have use them both on my Capri26 and my C30 MKIII. Yes, they rest on the factory bow roller. To help secure them, I drilled a 7/16 hole in the shaft right where the keeper pin on the roller will slide thru and secure the anchor. Before you drill, slide the anchor back and forth a little to find the balance point, and bow clearance position. I also attach a solid rubber bunge from the factory drilled hole in the top of the anchor to the bow pulpit railing to help keep the anchor from pivoting in rough weather. I have use this system in some pretty heavy weather with no movement at all from the anchor. Good luck Dave S/V Westwind

Bruce

I used a CQR on my Capri 26 and I'm now using the Bruce on my C-310. They both did well. I take a piece of nylon line and tie it to the eye of the anchor, then run it back to the deck cleat and tie it off tight. I don't have any problems with rocking.

anchor for C-28

When I bought my 28 last year the anchor did not ride on the roller to my satisfaction. I figured out that by placing it on it's SIDE with the flukes pointed either port or starboard it would ride real well and still deploy easy. The flukes are directed away from the fiberglass by the small angle's at the end of the bow sprint. Secured with either bungie or lick pin and now its ok. Dave
