Finished installing new anchor for the 2010 gunkholing season.

It seems I provided alot of evening entertainment last year for fellow gunkholers trying to set the anchor like in the movies....got alot of :wow::clap::thumbup::confused:

While at the dock people kept stopping and wanted to know how well it works......maybe this weekend.

Inquiring minds want to know

I am thinking about the Rocna too after MainSails video, and that exceeding long discussion in Ask All Sailors a few weeks ago.

I've been thinking about getting the 15 KG model. Please keep us informed how it works out as the season progresses.

valcour - they work great. We had a Bruce for many years and I thought that was good. The Rocna will PULL you off the bow when it sets. You don't need to wait for Paul's report. Maybe that's why he bought one!Why not read the anchoring link I previously provided? It's long, but worthwhile reading the whole thing -- 5 pages.

Stu - I have already decided that the rocna will be my next anchor, but it will be a while before I purchase one. I have read a lot about them (seems like all anchoring threads are that long), but it is a unique opportunity to hear from someone with the same model boat. I also have a friend on a hunter 34 who left Florida last week in the ditch on his way to Virgina who just bought a 33 lb rocna for the return trip. While their sizing chart is conservative, I planned on getting the size larger than Paul, as it is right at the edge of the range.

I hear you about anchoring threads. But the other link is to anchor SYSTEM sizing tables, so regardless of what HE does with HIS boat, YOU have to make the design and selection choices based on how YOU use YOUR boat. My Rocna is a No. 10, 22#. My friend with the same boat bought 20 KILOgram, 44# Rocna. Same boat, different uses and skippers and design criteria.

Quite frankly, you're risking your boat with other anchors. Make a decision and buy one, your ability to sleep better will thank you!

Anchor worked great first time out of the box and just one drop....dropped at 4 to 1 scope at low tide, 14 feet deep, swung around 360 deg all day and nite ....strong wind at nite for 1/2 hour.......didn't get out of the sack just went back to sleep.

PaulJ - Any New Words of Wisdom Based on Experience

Did you have to do any mods to your pulpit? Does it sit there nice out of the box? Do you have any issues dropping or pulling?

Ray

No modifications, just us a velcro strap around the anchor so that it does not move around on the pulpit and a 1/4" line from the anchor chain to the the cleat inside the anchor locker so no accidential droping of anchor.

After taking out of box, You have to take a lot of wrapping off the anchor.

Sometimes have a problem when pulling the anchor up, I have to bend over and remove the sea weed and I fart.

Too much detail at the end ...

Make sure you are not smoking when you pull up the anchor.

To much information! I might have to check the regs on that next time I want to get a jump at the start line.

I also intend to get a Rocna but I'd like to oversize it a bit and get the model 15 (33 lb.) Doesn anyone know if it will fit on the bow roller of the 310?

Oversizing an anchor system is really a waste of $$$. If you use the sizing tables I posted earlier in this thread, you'll see how they match. The Rocna website has some very very good information on their anchors and oversizing issues.

That said, if you use the Rocna website, they should have dimensions for their anchors, and you can compare it to what dimensions you have on your bow roller. Please be careful though, because the length of the shank may be too long to fit and go aft of your anchor locker "door."

Yeah, your probably right about not needing to to oversize but my plan is to do the ditch and head over to the Bahamas so I'd like the extra insurance. The Rocna site not only has the dimensions but I was told that they have instructions to make a template (http://www.rocna.com/distributable/patterns/). Worse comes to worse, I'll just get the 10 but I'd sleep better with the 15 especially since I'll be single handling most of the time.

Anchor

Paul -

I have the same anchor. LOVE it. Setting is outstanding, and it just looks tough on the bow roller. Lots of comments and questions, huh?

As much as the maker/seller can be a little overbearing, I think he has a winner of an anchor.

At SOME point, we need to rendezvous the Puget Sound (Salish Sea) 310's. There's a handful of us here.

How'd the storm ravaged jib situation work out this spring? That was you, right?

oversize?

DoctorSail,
The 310 has a design weight of 10,700 lbs (wing keel = 4.9 metric tons) and LOA of 31 feet, so I would round up and call it a Rocna 15 on the chart (which is agreeably conservative for normal conditions). I like to sleep well and was actually considering the 20kg just to be sure it's the last anchor I ever buy (considering I have the windlass)!
Now I just have to get the admiral out in conditions on the Chesapeake bay one time where my current 22# west marine danforth with 50' of chain will drag, and I have an excuse to buy one! My second anchor is also a danforth, so I need something different if I ever get away from all this mud again! In my opinion, a couple boat units on the next size up is easy insurance over the long run.

I cannot disagree with your logic Valcour, but the larger one may be a minor fit problem. The 10KG I bought works well for me, but JUST fits under the bail on the bow roller. NOT a big deal, you can just replace that, if you can find one bigger (manufacturer?).

I also can appreciate your logic more after doing our haulout this spring. Our 310 (a 1999 with average cruising gear) weighed 15,000 on the sling. I have a Fortress with a spare chain and rode, if I really need it, but going a size larger if you face high currents or winds might indeed be prudent.
