NEED TO REFINISH STAIRS ON A h33

I'm going to have to refinish the stair treads on my H33, 2005. I know that the balance of the interior is varnished, but the stair treads looked to have been oiled., I think that the stair treads are oiled teak. Any comments or how to advice?

Are you sure that they are oiled, as oiled surfaces would be pretty darn slippery wet.

I've oiled other furniture

I've oiled and reoiled danish modern furniture in the past and once it's soaked in there is no surface oil.

Stair treads are bare teak and teak oil. You will want to do the treatment and then teak oil again. They are a PITA. I've been looking at cleaning them, varnish and installing something like treadmaster treads but haven't yet.

Thanks Scott,
After doing some searchs on this site, a number of guys/girls have been using something called Captain Johns as a cleaner first.
I looked into the idea of rubber treads also but the front of my stair treads are rounded.
I guess I'll try the Cap. John's than oil.

You can always varnish or use other finish and a little sand to make them non-skid. There is also the 3m non-skid tape too.

Mine's a 2005 as well. I never thought of the curved front, I was just brainstorming and didn't measure yet.
Treadmaster does have larger sheets that could be cut? Treadmaster Flooring again I'm just brainstorming.

We have a dog and are constantly on shore and back onto the boat. The stairs take a constant beating as far as dirt etc.

I think you can get some non-slip "granule" stuff to mix into your varnish.

I refinsihed my companionway ladder 10 years ago as a Winter project and it is still in perfect condition. Before sanding, clean the surface with any marine teak cleaner, allow to throughly dry, and sand until the surface is clean. I used Epifanes and built four sub coats with the gloss and finsihed with two coats of the matte finish. I then applied Treadmaster self adhesive pads (ivory) and positioned them close to the outward edge of the step to prevent slipping. It is functional and looks like a fine piece of furniture. We wraped the stair treads with a piece of burber carpet from a big box store and simply used a staple gun to secure the carpet to the bottom side of each tread. It's softer on the feet and our lab is much happier with having something to get a grip going up and down. 3 years later and they still look good.
We use Scott's Liquid Gold on all of our interior teak. It is inexpensive, and it lasts a full year even here in the FL heat.
