Dear Fellow Sailors,

Your help is greatly appreciated as my summer boating is in jeopardy if I don’t solve an issue I have.

I purchased a used Irwin last year and am getting the bugs out after a 4 month use of it (NE is a short boating season). Trying to find an economical solution as my HBW50-R2 transmission wouldn’t catch (forward/reverse) when I last used it (sailed right up the the mooring - wind power). Rebuild kits are astronomical as are new versions. Question: can a lack of trani fluid completely prevent it going into gear? Does anyone know how the transmission resistance should feel if attempting to change gear right on the trani itself.
Any suggestions for sourcing this item?
Thank you,
Mark

I have used Fred Warner Marine and Outdoors. Bought my last transmission from them.

If there is not transmission fluid in the transmission now, you have serious issues. If it has been run for any length of time, rebuilding may not be an option. Finding a used transmission may be the more economical option, but then you won't know what kind of shape it is in.

If that is a hydraulic tranny, running it w/o oil, the clutch plates are probably trashed. If it is a gear tranny, the bearings are probably trashed.
It isn't all that expensive to find used Borg Warner Velvet Drive trannies, but the harder part would be finding the correct gear ratio.
