Need Newport to Montauk Advice

Picking up my Cat 32 in Newport in a few weeks and headed for CT. I would appreciate advice from anyone who has this trip. Is Montauk realistic in a day from Newport or should we stop at Block? What kind of timing should I be trying for with the tides. What are the nice marinas in Montauk. I was thinking Montauk to the CT. river on the second leg? Is that realistic? Any advice would be appreciated.

Gary, I made it from Newport to Sag Harbor, Long Island in 12 hours averaging 5 kts. over water, and the tide(s) were against us the entire trip. We left Newport at 5:00am (very easy harbor to maneuver) and clearly marked, and arrived in Sag Harbor at 6 pm. You could definately make the CT River, especially if you happen to catch favorable currents -- ebbing out of Newport and Flooding at the Race. Let me know if you need any other specifics. Take it easy

If you're just picking up the boat, why not take it easy and stop at Block Island on the way to Montauk? Prevailing winds are from the southwest, so you may have to motor the whole way. As for Montauk to the CT River, you will be able to sail that given a southwest wind. Just be sure to catch Plum Gut at the right time - it has 5 knot currents at peak. It also has a standing wave, so even if you go with the tide and wind you should turn your motor on and be vigilant.

Why Montauk ?

Gary, If the Ct. river is your destination why go by way of Montauk unless this part pleasure cruise. On the way back from the 2000 c320 regatta in Stamford I motored the 45 m from Essex to Pt. Judith Pond in one day easily. You could stretch it to or from Newport but it would be a Long Day. Heading west as you are there is allways Watch Hill for a stopover although the round about entrance is a half plus hour of wasted time. In any case get a tide table and current flow chart because if at all possible you don't want to fight the Race or any of the tidal flow in that area. A few weeks ago I motored from Shelter Island, Long Island to BI and was showing 6.6 through the water and a high of 9.3 mostly 9ish over land GPS speed. Heard good things about it

Montauk looks like the first stop after Block. I guess if I stick to the coast I could make Mystic, but I've been there before. Don't like Watch Hill cause I like to tie to a piece of wood at night. Do you think Montauk is realistic in a day from Newport? I guess I should leave 1 hour before low tide so I can ride it all the way in.

Just keep in mind...

that it may take you a couple of hours to reach BI Sound from Newport -- I would give myself a bit more than an hour berfore low tide, leaving Newport... Good Luck -Chuck

Gary, If you will be cruising or just passing through the Block Island Sound/Fishers Island Sound/Long Island Sound Area, I would suggest that you pick up a copy of Eldridge for about $10. It's available at most chandleries, marinas, etc, and contains a huge amount of info regarding tides and currents in the area. One section about an imaginary "X" south of Newport is worth the price alone. It can really help you plan a cruise in advance, and hit all the tides favorably. With the info in Eldridge I have been able to easily make Mystic to the Vineyard in one day. Just have to pick the right day with the right tides. Good Luck on your trip. Tom Soko Julandra #659
