My wife and I are planning a trip to the southern Bay this summer. We would like some suggestions and recommendations. We have been to Tangier, Crisfield, and most of the Maryland spots. We are interested in the Virginia Eastern and Western Shores. If you have some "must see" and specific spots that you like, we would like to hear about them. We want to spend several days in each of different spots, maybe 3 or 4 places total. We will probably stay in a transient slip if the weather is real hot, but we like to anchor also. Thanks, Mary Jo & Mike DiMario s/v Serenity H376 Media, PA

Try Urbanna, VA

Try Urbanna, Va. It is on Urbanna Creek off the Rappahannock River. Nice wide creek with plenty of room to ancor out. You are also about 6 or 7 NM from Carter creek where the Tides Inn is located. It is about 14nm up the Rappahannock from Windmill Point. Mark S/V Gratitude

Go to Deltaville

Deltaville is on the peninsula between the Rappahannock and the Piankitank(sic). It's a quirky little town with tons of boat dealers. There's only a couple of restaurants. Taylor's is our favorite. Its just a quiet laid back place with lots of friendly folks. Gwynns Island is also close by. But stay away from Hole in the Wall. There's more wall there than hole. Markdb

Cape Charles

Cape charles is a Little Mayberry type town making a comback. There is a beautiful "downtown" with an old fashioned soda fountian with great breakfast and lunch, and several good restraunts for dinner. And a few little shops, like an old fashion hardware store. Also a beautiful beach with a boardwalk type walking area. July 4th is a great smalltown celebration with seafood venders setup along the boardwalk. Only drawback is the marina, which I like, with recently rebuilt docks, they have elec and water but no other facilaties. The marina is near downtown you have to cross a RR track that goes to the train ferry. I think Cape Charles is a Must see destination on the Southern Bay. Cape Charles will take you back in time about 50 years. Also 5 miles south is the Cement Ships of Kiptopeake. Which is a great Anchorage with good fishing. Protected from the open Bay by a bunch of half sunk Cement liberty ships from WWII. Sunk there as a breakwater for the car ferry before the Bridge Tunnel. Usually good bottom fishing in the anchorage. Lots of room for anchoring even when several boats are in the anchorage.

Hole is the wall

Hi Mark B., I too have been a victim of Hole in the Wall. How about that sand bar? I found it trying to get out of a storm. I must have misread the chart I guess. Brian D.

Mike,

If I were making the trip from your home port, I would go Solomans, then Tangier (cause its inexpensive to tie up and puts you in range of all of the lower Bay). Next day sail over to Fleets Bay (the area between Windmill Pt and the Great Yicomico). There are several very nice anchorages here; best of which IMHO is behind "Grogg Island". Nice, sheltered, deeep water anchorage, w/ beach to dingy over to. Then go up the Rapppahannock, under the bridge, and into Carters Creek. Anchor behind Tides Inn. Your wife will love Tides Inn... eligant old Va. resort (bring a Jacket to go to dinner). Then over to Urbanna for lunch the next day... then back down the river to Deltaville for a night or 2... Call Norton's Yacht Sales... they will be glad you see u and your 376... If you need any parts, equip. filters, advice etc. they are the place... May even help u w/ a ride to a restraunt, etc. Then come down to Mobjack Bay and anchor up the East River... very nice... From there you may want to sail down to Norfolk (4-5 hrs). Sail past the Navel Base and down the Eliz. River to Waterside. After a day or 2, head back up to Cape Charles (~6hrs). Call Charles Thain proprietor of the Eastville Inn and he will send a car for u for dinner... excellent... Then Christfield, and back North. Read "Cruising Guide to Ches. Bay"... for more excellent info on all of these places.... Have a nice crise...

Check the May...

issue of Spinsheet magazine. I think that there was a good article about cruising the Virginia shores. It covers all of the stops that everyone has recommended so far. It should be available at your marina, if not, tell your marina to request it. It's a great, free magazine for the bay!

Mike, where is "Grogg island"?

Can't find it on a chart and never heard of it. Do you have lat and long or can give us directions? Since you put the name in quotes, I take it that it is a name locals use. Allan

Thanks for the advice!

Thank you all. I like the suggestions. It will give us a good idea of what to and how. I think we do have a copy of this month's SpinSheet but I haven't read it yet. Also, we have a 4 or 5 year old cruising guide. I think I have heard enough about Delataville, Urbana, the Tides and Cape Charles to make them a must see. Anyone advocate for the Onancock or Occohannock? Thanks again, Mary Jo & Mike DiMario

Allen,

I don't have my charts here, but "Grogg Island" is a small unnamed (?) island just east of ??Dividing Creek (I think)... off Fleets Bay about half way between Antipoison Creek and the Great Wicomico River... Mike/Mary Jo.. Actually, I think that Onancock is a much nicer place than Chrisfield... its only about 3 hrs N of Cape Charles.. and if you have the time, its a definite "do"...

Yup, that it... Great anchorage.. except crowded on the weekends during the Summer. Nice to see someone from the North Bay come South... usually we have to go north to see u guys... Any idea when you're making the trip.. maybe there are some of us down here who may be out there and turn it into a little rondavous(sp?).

South Chesy tour

Buck, We will be leaving Tolchester on Sunday, July 4th, staying at the Rhode River overnight. The next 2 nights, we booked at Zanhiser's in Solomon. I was looking at the charts to size up the distance. I am not sure I won't just go right to Grog the next night instead of stopping at Tangier. In any case, either Wednesday the 7th or Thursday the 8th, we should be there. It also depends on the weather. We installed an onboard generator but don't sleep with it on. If it is terribly hot, we will probably opt for an overnight slip nearby. Mike D

Pirate Cove is better

To the south of Grog Island on the western most edge of Fleets Island [also known as Windmill Point Neck] is Pirate Cove, and it is far better than Grog Island. There is almost nothing left of Grog, but Pirate Cove is a lush expansive sandy point and cove with long beaches to walk and explore on both sides. You anchor is a spot protected on three sides and if you are expecting bad weather overnight you take the short trip into Antipoison Creek.

Kinsale, Va.

We just made a 2 day trip from Solomons to Cobb Island up the Potomac. We stayed one night in Kinsale just 12 miles up the Potomac on the Va, shore in a delightful little bed and breakfast called the Skipjack Inn. Built in 1912 as an oysterman's cottage. Our boat has no ac and when we can we stay in places on shore. The Inn is part of the Port Kinsale Marina. They have a website. The restaurant was wonderful also and the dock service was perfect. I understood the new owners had just bought the marina the day before. The place was full with lots of very nice transients and regulars. When you stay in the Inn your slip is free and it's only about 100 yds walk. David
