What type of cabin carpeting have owners of mid-size boats used? I'm looking for something washable, sturdy and presentable. I bought a 1991 Catalina 28 and the previous owner had custom cut carpeting to precisely fit the cabin entire floor in pieces like a jigsaw puzzle. It needs replacing and before I duplicate it, I'd like to hear what other owners have done. Bill Greenberg sailor4498@aol.com

Carpeting

I buy throw rugs with foam backing from Wallyworld and replace them every 3-4 years. Easy / cheap. I had custom carpeting on the boat when I bought her. It was hard to access the bilge and install the ladder (C27). Never again for me, but I operate on the KISS principle.

Carpet for 28

I have a 1990 28 and the original carpet(one piece with sewn edges) was looking a little shabby. I called the Catalina parts department and they quoted $197 for new carpet. I thought that was quite reasonable. Any color you want as long as its grey!

Custom carpet

My boat had custom wool carpet when I bought her. Since I don't swim off the boat or bring a lot of dirt or sand aboard, it's been great! Throw rugs are fine but just don't give the same feeling. But then again, I'm a chick! :) LaDonna

Carpet Advise

Just make sure that your carpet, whatever you get, is mildew resistant. A must for boats.

wool works!

I've since gone the throw rug route on my catalina, but on my old boat, I used wool carpet with great success, but it never had water in the bilge either.

Carpet from Lowe's or Home Depot

I have a Catalina 30. I bought carpet from Lowe's home improvement that comes on a huge roll. It cost about $60. I got a large enough piece to cover the entire floor. I then cut it in my driveway to exactly match the template of the floor using a carpet knife. I finished the edges with an edge glue that they sell at Lowe's. It looked like elmers glue and keeps the edges from fraying. The carpet is thin enough to pickup easily when checking the bilge. It looks great.

Not a big deal

Buy what you like at the home store and don't fret over it. Most anything will do fine. I wouldn't go out of my way to spend too much, you're going to replace it in 2-3 years anyway. Stick with a short pile. Also, if your current carpet fits well, use it as a pattern to cut the new carpet.

Small Throw

I've used small throw rugs. You can usually find small pieces at home centers such as Home Depot or Lowes. Most recently, I saw pieces about 30" x 60", fully edge-bound, for under ten dollars. It makes for easy access to the bilge, and can be easily move to scrub the sole. Pick one you like, and then replace it in 2-3 years. Randy
