Hi,

I need to buy a trailer to bring an Oday 23 from Albany NY to Michigan. Anyone have any ideas or tips on where to find one? I'd like something used as a custom made new one is so expensive.

Ughh...I bought an Oday 23 in May 2008 and had the same process. It came with a rickety single axle trailer that I paid $600 to a mobile trailer repairman to make "road ready." At that point, it got new springs, bearings, etc. It still had a wooden set of rails that formed to the boat.

It did make it 45 minutes to my home lake. After that, the wooden rails were done.

I searched for a new trailer on craigslist, ebay, etc. I never could find a "good deal."

There is a guy in Texas you makes "economical" sailboat trailers. http://www.customsailboattrailers.com/
I spoke to him in 2008 and I think he was quoting $2000 to $2500 for a painted trailer. No bells & whistles.

My Oday has been moored in my home lake for 2 years now and my single axle lawn ornament is sitting in my inlaws lake house backyard! I'm thinking about getting the single axle POS fixed!!

Rick VDH,

There are many good posts about trailers in the archives. Essentially used trailers are usually used up. When a good used boat trailer comes on the market it is gone before you think should I ask.

As you said, new trailers are expensive. Often more than the boat. If you are going to trailer sail or trailer a lot you come out better getting new. In addition to George that Kevin referred to there are several others. Getting one made near you reduces cost. Galvanized is best way to go. Some guys get aluminum, but that has gotten very expensive compared to galvanized.

Since you have a long trip, do not consider any questionable trailer. I have always had good trailers road ready and still have burnt a hub.

If you are going to leave boat in water, consider a professional tower who has a maintained trailer. Think about two dollars a mile, but then it gets to your place. Use a crib or stands to receive at delivery if going to your yard.

Again, seriously question any used trailer for a trip from Albany, N.Y. to Michigan. Have you considered a two to three week sailing trip?

Re: sailboat trailers

Thanks, Ed. Good advice though I'm disappointed. I checked one place in Michigan that makes trailers but it would be twice what I'd pay for the boat! Your advice makes me want to check others here, though.

What a nightmare, Kevin. Thanks. That's essentially the same worry I have about a used trailer. Seems there ought to be a way without breaking the bank.

The purchase of a trailer is an investment in your boating. I just haven't chosen to make that additional investment. I wanted to wait to see how much time I had for sailing (I own an advertising agency, have 2 boys (7 & 5) and live 70 minutes from the boat).

If I were you, I would get the boat transferred by a boat moving service. See www.uship.com. Play around with it and make sure it's the boat for you. If so, then work on the trailer situation.

I am surprised at Kevin not recommending one of the better and very good boat movers in the southeast:

http://www.theboatexchange.com/

Come on Kevin, throw the local guy a bone...

One of the best, also pricey, boat trailer makers is:

http://www.triadtrailers.com/index.htm Mr. Orro could give you a quote. He is in the processing of moving from Connecticut to North Carolina. Check out his contact page. He gives his new street address with his old directions.

But do not let that deter you from calling him. He is a quality type guy.

And if you want an old painted trailer you might ask for Stan at:
http://www.rhodes22.com/ His trailers are set up for his boats -- 22 foot --but might be usuable for your boat. Call and ask. He usually has a couple of rebuilt trailers ready for his boats.

Have you considered having a professional captain sail your boat west?

My 23 sets on a tandem axle EZ Loader with rollers. It's a great trailer. If you find one that is either a "roller" or has bunks you can get the appropriate parts to customize it to fit your boat. For example, to change it from a power boat trailer to a sailboat trailer. Lots of dealers as well.

Shine On!
