The wood can be one of the most rewarding tasks... mine looked a collection of lumber from a scrap yard when I started and hinges on the door were completely corroded. You're getting lots of good advice... key is patience. Take the time to plan things out and do it right.

By the looks of that dock I'm going to take a wild stab and guess that you're at the Wharf? It looks like the Wharf... just up the road a piece.

Houston Hardwoods over on W 34th st have all the good ply you'll need. I drive up 200 mile round trip to buy from them. Meranti and BS 1088 Okume. Also any hardwoods you'd need

Take a lot of pictures. We love to cheer people on as they progress from moldy old hulk to shiny yacht.
It's also a great way to get assistance. It never ceases to amaze me how the experts here can diagnose a problem or offer an insight once they see a picture.

Don Casey has published a compilation book that is essentially four of his books in one.

I have a copy and I use it all of the time. I've restored 6 badly neglected boats including tearing out bulkheads etc. Don's book was (is) like a Bible to me.

On the subject of mold.... The borax idea is a good one

Any anytime you are going to be away from the boat, open up a few jars of old fashion moth balls. Keep them in a jar so you can put the lid on when you visit the boat. The mothballs will keep the bugs out but also, the main ingredient (Naphthalene) kills mold spores.

But the best way to clean an old boat is to just go for it......

It is a two person job. One person has the pressure washer in hand and the other the shop vac. An hour of that and you will have sparkly bilges and mold free bulkheads.

I still remember doing this with an old MacGregor 22 .... my daughter had the pressure washer and when she hit the cabin sides with the pressure washer she said "Oh.. it's white".

I guess she thought the mold was grey paint.

You can get an ozone generator on Amazon for around $160. It kills mold and mildew. Then it is less heavy chemicals to clean it off. Also kills spores so it does not return right away. Downside is that it will make real rubber brittle, so you should take stuff off the boat, like shoes, when you do it. We use one 1x a year in the spring. You need to be off the boat and have it closed up when running it. An hour should do it

The woodwork will be fun! I totally suck at carpentry (my saying is, "I've cut it twice and it's STILL to short!". I've destroyed a small forest of expensive wood cutting, sawing, sanding, re-cutting, sawing etc. But the final product was extremely satisfying. Doesn't look factory by any means, but everyone that sees my 43 year old v24 (had moss, mold, grime from sitting in the woods for YEARS unattended, sound familiar?) says the boat now has great character. Take lots of pics to fill your scrapbook!

Essential book, I agree

My boat needed a bottom job, and I did it myself a year ago, using book plus suggestions and moral support from other boat owners in the yard and the marina guys. You'll also end up with a great sense of satisfaction.

Clueless 1, if you want to destroy mold, the absolute BEST product I've ever used is X-14, available in generally any hardware store....... phenomenal stuff. Use in a well ventilated area, or become more clueless
