check the archives

If you believe in such things, there ARE magic words. It has been discussed here before and if you'll look at the archives and search name change you'll get the right magic words. Good luck with your new boat. Mike

The best part

of denaming/renaming a boat is the last line: "In consequence whereof, and in good faith, we seal this pact with a libation offered according to the hallowed ritual of the sea." Is there a particular "libation" that brings better luck than others?

Tim's link is the one...

... I used. I have John Vigor's book and used the denaming ceremony last fall. In one month the Hunter 26.5 will be ready to launch under her new name. I can't mention it yet as this will offend the gods.

Pusser's Rum is the correct libation -

Can anyone say and prove there is a better offering to the sea gods??

Prayer for name change

I found this prayer in an article on name changing, plus don't forget the champagne, a glass for the owner/owners, a glass on the boat, a glass in the water for Neptune. Breaking the glasses after....The Rum may be a good idea.. Otherwise I like the 48North Link.... Good Luck, I have to go thru it later this spring. Pray for Naming Vessel "As Amphitrite, Goddess of the Sea...I Bless this Vessel. In the name of all who have sailed "Aboard"...this ship in the past, and may sail "Aboard"...her in the Future,we Invoke the Ancient Gods of the Wind, and the Sea to Favor us with their Blessing Today."

I didn't do the ritual

I changed the name on my boat but didn't perform the "denaming and renaming" procedure and my Oday 272 was struck by lightning this past summer and was a total loss. My advise is to DO THE RITUAL.

Beware the Gods...

I've owned 6 boats in 30+ years of sailing. I have never changed the name the boat came with. My last boat just happened to come without a name and I thought this is finally the opportunity to put my chosen name on my boat! I had the name all picked out and was about to order it from BoatUS. I foolishly didn't think that the mandatory naming ritual was going to be necessary as my boat had no name....yet I worried about it. Should I or should I not? A few days later, Hurricane Isabel settled the issue for me. The boat was totaled. These rituals are not to be ignored..... PS: The story of this loss will appear in an upcoming edition of the Chesapeake Bay's sailing magazine "SpinSheet." PSS: I now have another boat, that also came with a name. I'm going to keep that name....

Superstitious !!!

When I bought my boat I knew of several people who had changed the names on their boats. But being superstitious I decided I should do the ritual as I changed the name. And I did, a lot of club members showed up we had champagne and I did the “prayer” as I ripped the last remaining letters of the old name off the boat. It was great fun!!! That was in May end of Sept. I was dismasted!! Quite the experience!! So being the superstitious one that I am I will never change the name of a boat again. I say if you can live with the name keep it!!!

just letters

A name on a boat is just letters. I think you bought the boat for it's condition, price, your intentions, etc.... If you were given a dog, would you change it's name? If you adopted a child, would you change it's name?

supernatural

Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs (GW notwithstanding) and so I wouldn't dis anyone for praying while peeling plastic off their transom. Nor do I thing it's a bad idea to have a little fun with a tongue-in-cheek ritual. However, IMHO nature has enough to keep a sailor occupied without looking beyond her for things to worry about.

If you're serious, there IS a God

You can take your shots at me on this, but some of you seem serious, so I have to inject here that there IS a God out there, and it is his creation that we sail through, and it is by his mercy that we return safely. I will Christen (note the spelling) my new-to-me boat, and add to it a God-pleasing name, and ask God's blessing upon all who sail upon her. (From the Navy Hymn) Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who biddest the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea! O Father, King of earth and sea, We dedicate this ship to Thee. In faith we send her on her way; In faith to Thee we humbly pray: O hear from heaven our sailor’s cry And watch and guard her from on high! Tom Monroe Carlyle Lake

I'd Be Surprised....

....if anyone were serious about the rituals. It's just good fun, and for most of us a good excuse to have a drink among friends. I'm having a new-to-me-boat delivered within a couple of weeks and fully intend to go through the denaming/renaming ritual. Is it because I really believe in the superstitions? Of course not, but then - just in case........

Fred, what is the problem with Tom's response?

Fred, I happen to believe that there is one God and that the renaming ritual is just that,a ritual. I don't see that Tom violated any of the rules. May be you should read the rules. I think your response violated them. I don't know what has happened to this forum but I don't respond anymore because there are about six people here that have taken the site over for their own personal chat room. In the last year I have seen harsh responses to new comers that never posted again. All I see are people poking at others. Maybe we need more Tom's with morals and ethics. This use to be a good site. There use to be good advice here. Any more I can't read a thread with out someone hacking on someone. I wish all the people posting on this site would help put to rest the harshness in this site. This reminds me of the other site (remaining un-named) that two years ago was like this site is getting. Come on folks, raise the standards back to what they were. sincerely, r.w.landau
