Mystery O-ring

I am hoping someone can help me with a mystery part on my Hunter 260 (2003). There is an access panel below the helm pedistal on the ceiling of the aft bunk that has an O-ring, which the manual doesnt mention. Sailboatowners.com also didnt seem to know about it. I have been trying to replace the ring as it has rotted, but i cannot find a match. It is an irregular, non-circle cross section I believe.

Is anyone aware of this component, and where to get it, or aware of an alternative way to seal the seam of a circular access panel? Thanks in advance.

If my memory serves - I read years ago on this site of a member that installed a round inspection port under the steering pedestal to repair and maintain his steering gear. It was not a factory install.
Something similar to this - but a bit larger.

Perhaps a call to our SBO hosts can help you out?

Here’s one of the other threads discussing the mod.

Goop dries into a very hard rubber. More than once, I’ve used it to construct gaskets. Here are some pics where I made a gasket for a swing keel pivot pin on a balboa 26
and the gasket for the ballast tank on a Hunter 26.

@StuckinReverse

I read your response and I am stumped. I was the dealer responsible for the wheel addition on the 260. Can you take a picture or photo of th O ring as I do not have a clue on this one. Thanks
Dave

A private message was sent to the poster with no response back.
The deck portion of the boat includes the aft cabin ceiling. There is a rear deck panel that was made to accommodate a tiller or the other panel for wheel steering. The wheel panel is beefed up structurally to support the wheel from swaying. The panel is screwed down to the deck. The area below the panel is open to the transom to allow for use as a gas locker, passage of steering cables and storage. This construction does not allow water, fumes, critters etc inside the cabin.

Without taking the wheel panel off to replace steering cables, I would use a small tube to route the 3300 series cables thru the steering quadrant thru the small hole at the base of the quadrant. You would need to remove the small nuts and rubber.covers to allow passage of the cables thru the small tube. Then I would take a long hook or crow bar to turn the cable towards the stern accessed from the stern seat that flips up.

I believe what happened an inspection port was cut in the deck panel by the previous owner below in order to route new cables thru the steering quadrant without coming here for advice.

I asked the owner in a private message for a picture to identify the inspection port or a photo. We can tell if the inspection port has an o ring or not. If not , simply take the inspection port off, clean and recaulk . I would suggest using a pure silicone for example GE used for sealing exterior windows and doors or bathroom doors.

@StuckinReverse Please advise

Thank you all for the great advice, I asked for a flashlight and you brought out the sun.

I will be visiting my boat later this week and will share pictures/manufacturer info of the inspection port, for those curious.
