removehtml]On this cold and snowy winter day, I have been planning for a Spring trip down the length of the east coast (on the outside) from New England to Florida. While looking at NOAA chart #11544, I saw a symbol that I've never seen before, and couldn't find on NOAA chart #1, Chapman's, Annapolis Book..., or the Maptech site. The symbol looks like the Greek symbol for "female" upside down, sitting in an open trapezoidal pan. There are 41 of these symbols arranged in a grid 2 miles offshore of the entrance to Beaufort, NC. Does anybody know what this symbol represents? NOAA ENC chart #11544 is available for download from the NOAA website if anybody's really curious. Error: Error: expected [/URL], but found [/removehtml] instead[/removehtml]

anchorage but more likely capped oil wells

The anchorage symbol is very similar albeit with a round arc not an open trapezoid. Hence I suspect, (due to the large number it is a submerged oil field structure(s).

Anchorage

Felix, I could not find the symbols you mention, but the online 11545 shows 41 circles off Beaufort Inlet which they identify as anchorage berths. Try the added site. Look on the left margin just below the 45' line. Also, the green circles are identified on Chart 1, Nautical Chart Sympols, Abbreviations and Terms, line 11.2, page 55. http://chartmaker.ncd.noaa.gov/mcd/chart1/hydro/N.pdf

Not Sure Either

There is a note that identifies the cirlces for anchorage berths for Navy ships. It is one of the areas that we have munitions ships and many other preloaded logistic support ships, I am anxious to hear what they are or to at least see a picture of them.

if you are refering to the grids of circles on both sides of channel, they are dumping sites. check the notes availavle on chart for explination.

Good Ideas & More Mystery

Randy, I went to your link and saw the green circles on that paper chart, along with the note that they are berths. What's strange is that on the NOAA ENC chart, which can be downloaded at nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/enc/download.htm the symbols are not green circles, but instead are yellow symbols as I described above. But they're in the same location as the green circles on your chart, so they must be berths. Chuck & Roger, they are not the symbol for either oil wells or dump sites, but good try. I've tried to type out the outline of the symbol in asterisks below, but I don't know if it'll come out right. * ******* * * * * * * * * * * * ***

Just Stay Clear!

If you cannot determine what the circles are, the water seems deep enough to just stay clear of the area. You will be all right, then. But they do look like an anchorage to me! :)

Let's see if this design works

Try to ignore the dots, they're just spacers. The symbol looks like the pattern of the asterisks ......* ....***** ......* ....*...* ...*.....* ..*.......* ...*.....* ....*...* ......* *...........* .*.........* ..*********

It is obviously

denoting a mating ground for undersea monsters. Did a Japanese oil rig happen to go down there recently?

ENC S-57 charts ....

and other international hydrologic publications are increasingly following a new international standard/agreement for underwater sea-floor structure, etc. etc. This is become an international standard based on the IHO S-57 for electronic charting. My present .pdf copy that lists all these new symbols is somehow corrupted; but, if I had to **GUESS**, your symbols are 'probably' the new underwater symbols for dumping ground with moving debris. Dumping ground because its near a large city, no oil rigs (other than experimental test wells) have ever been on the Atlantic Coast. The old IHO website that listed these symbols http://www.iho.shom.fr/publicat/free/files/PresLib_3.3_Addendum.pdf doesnt seem to be working anymore. If anyone discovers the 'new' or correct address for these symbols I would appreciate it if you could post the URL.

Thanks Felix - I'll take this opportunity to share the prize equally with all the participants. But, I too like the Godzilla reference.
