My new tiller

Well here it is from template to finish the new Tiller. And it will even be usable as it will go up and over the wheel unlike its predecessor.
I tried some thing new I used Ipe and Cypress in alternate layers. I have literally tons of the Ipe. Milled the strips sanded with #60 grit for teeth cleaned all with Acetone and glued up with west system epoxy.
The other two pieces are the motor well stringers I glassed them and then put on a second layer when I installed the in the boat.

I have literally tons of the Ipe.

What a beautiful tiller. I want to make one just like for my O'Day 25. My straight tiller keeps banging the wife's knees whenever we tack.

Where did you find the Ipe? I've been planning to make a recurve or long bow (as in bow and arrow) and Ipe is one of the best woods you can use. I'm looking for roughly a 3" x 3" x 6' length. If you know of any good suppliers of tropical woods, particularly in the Chicago area, please let me know.

If you are interested in Ipe it is some times called “Brazilian red wood” it is a 35 + year deck material. No finish needed it grays up like teak. I only used it for my tiller out of “meanness” as my dad would say and as I mentioned I have quite a lot of it. It is a booger to glue, eats carbide tooling you can forget about high speed steel, its heavy like iron wood or Brazilian rose wood. When decking with it it has to be screw fastened and every screw hole has to be drilled over size. Mahogany is as easy to get and will last almost as long if you keep finish on it.
