Hi everyone,
I recently acquired a '73 Pearson 36 (as if you couldn't tell by my log-in name) that has been a live aboard for the past few years. The catch is, the P.O. only really used it as an apartment and never sailed her. I've been in contact with the gentleman who owned her previous to that and gotten some info on her history but not much as of late.
The good side is she has a Universal Atomic 4 gas engine which runs pretty well (new fuel pump, fuel filter, water pump, plugs, wires, and distributor) and fires right up and runs strong. The sails are in very good shape with no rips, fraying, or de-laminating. I have rolled out and inspected each one.
The bad part is the previous owner (because he only really used he as a place to live) pretty much disconnected every piece of DC equipment on the boat (depth finder, vhf radio, nav lights, etc) that wasn't a creature comfort (the engine compartment blower and bilge pump still work, thank goodness) so I have a lot of re-wiring to do to make her seaworthy again.
The dockmaster at the marina where the boat is berthed is also a certified diver and just inspected and cleaned the hull and replaced the shaft seal 2 months ago for the P.O. He said the hull looks good and will probably be fine for one more year before needing the bottom repainted.
This is my first sailboat and the question I have is, other than the electrical system, what are some other areas that I really need to look into and ensure are working properly before I attempt to power her about 80 miles up the intracoastal (too narrow to sail so I'll have to just use the motor) from St Augustine, Fl to St Marys, GA to a new marina closer to home?
Thanks everyone!
