I would like some suggestions for covering the approx 4 1/2 " hole left by removing an non-working gauge on the starboard cabin/cockpit wall just above the galley sink on my Oday 26. I can put the instrument (nonworking) back in, but wondered if there were any clever ideas. For example, I thought about fashioning a hardwood cover with a plaque with our name, or maybe even an round opening port. Maybe it would be a good place for a small wench handle holder, or a compass.
Also below are pictures of the nearly competed interior.
When i finish that, i will turn my attention back to the deck, and rigging. I still have to mount the travelers, mast plate, and winches.
I fashioned the bilge covers from cherry plywood. I sealed the plywood with several coats of epoxy (as i did any plywood used in the boat including all holes and saw cuts). Except i did not seal areas that I was going to stain and finish.
The stain is a custom mix of "shaker pine" and "red mahogany". The polyurethane I used, after the first coat, was Cabbot Semi-gloss. I ended up liking it alot better than the "miniwax" brand. It had a harder deeper finish. As always, surface prep is far more important than what you use.
You can see how i painted the cabin sides in the forward head instead of backing them with carpet/liner. It seemed to me that would be a cleaner finish, and dryer to boot.
