Hi everyone. I am new to this forum. I did (and still do but am trying to sell) a 23' O'day. I just bought a Catalina 30. It is a 1978, bought it out of VT for $6,000. Does this seem like a good price to you guys? I know the boat needs some work, but is there anything that I should look for in this model? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Look forward to learning alot from you guys.

That's dirt cheap

A lot of boats of that vintage are selling on average $12,000 - $19,0000. If your boat is in good sound shape your got a steal. Does it have a diesel or gas engine, what condition is the upholstery in, wheel or tiller, does it have a holding tank (some older boats did not)? Did you have a survey done, if not, I would be a little concerned about blisters. Be aware that in order to insure a boat over 20 years old, the insurance company requires a survey every 5 years (it may be every 3 years). Check the engine, exhaust elbow, thru hull fittings. Good luck and enjoy!

Just the other day my brother in law mentioned

he looked at an older 30 that needed "a lot of work" including new engine (currently a non-operating gas inboard engine) for $6,000 so it is hard to tell if you got a real deal wothout knowing more about condition. If the motor runs you are that far ahead of the game anyway. The Catalina 30 website will have a lot of useful info for you at the attached URL. Good sailing & enjoy your new boat, tho' probably a little cool for sailing in your neighborhood right now.

Well I was told that the transmission was "stuck" and they couldn't get it to move. They knew nothing about the engine except it had been winterized last year when the people had motored the boat in from NY. The motor is a gas atomic 4. When I went to inspect the boat I found out that the shift cable was seized, the trans. shifts when you disconnect the cable. The did not know the condition of the engine, but it did turn over by hand. It does have a holding tank on board. Structurally the boat is a tank. No leaks on deck, no soft spots. I know I am going to have to replace the teak bulkheads that the main stays attache to, they are starting to get soft from previous water damage running down the chain plates. About 1/2 the interior needs to be replaced, it's just outdated. Some wiring issues. No blisters on the bottom at all. The boat has been epoxy barrier coated. Mast and rigging is in excellent condition. Sails are old but will work the 150 Genoa has never been used. The boat has wheel steering. Keel and bolts are fine. Bright work needs attention as does the electrical. But seeing has my father owns a marina and I can work on it there this shouldn't be a problem.

Sounds pretty good jr,

Out here where we don't freeze I think I'd want to get the engine running. There must be dozens of those Atomics within a stones throw of my boat that are 25 to 35 years old and doing OK. You may just want to fog the cylinders and drain the carb till spring, sounds like you have access to a local marine mechanic to better advise you, I get the impression the motor has not been run in a year and hard to tell what they did when they "winterized" it.
