I’m starting this thread to share my process of trying to make my new to me Catalina 42 a nice boat again. She has a solid hull and deck. Most of the work needed is cosmetic and cleaning. Also a lot of preemptive work I should do along the way. I already started working on some of the leaking windows and cleaning the bilge. I should have taken a before photo, it was nasty but I’m making some good strides already. I have to work on some of the deck hatches as they are leaking a bit and need to get to a few things required by the insurance company done.

I just replaced the hose going from the galley sink to the thru hull. The guy at the marine parts store gave me wire reinforced exhaust hose. Is this ok? A lot better then what was there (hose with a stamped date of 1998 ) this is one of the requirements from the insurance company for immediate replacement and for good reason.

Wire reinforced hose for this application is overkill since there is no issue of the hose collapsing under pressure. All hoses should be doubled clamped below the waterline. Good luck great boat

My catalina has fiber reinforced vinyl for the drain. No issues in 31 years. On your boat, I'm guessing Catalina used exhaust hose because it was what they had on hand or someone was too lazy to get the vinyl stuff from the stockroom. Is this the boat that was in your family for 20 some years?

It's OK for the next 100 years anyway.

The only problem I can see down the road is that the interior of the ex. hose is rough and may tend to allow grease, fat, bacteria and other enchanting substances to stick to the walls of the hose. Reinforced vinyl is slick and doesn't hold waste products.

Something else to keep you awake at night .

I got the beds and all the cushions out of the boat. My plan is to work from the bow to the stern in cleaning and any repairs. Hoping get the interior clean and mostly smell free then put the cushions and bedding back in. The cushions smell pretty bad so my plan is to tackle those piece by piece out side the boat. I am testing some cleaning methods on the cushion that goes on the salon table for bedding. I have the cover soaking in oxiclean and the foam has been sprayed with vinegar and sitting the sun with a nice breeze flowing through it currently. I am not sure if that is going to be enough. I may try the trash bag technique next and if that doesn't work then i guess foam replacement... this will be an indicator on how the rest of the cushion cleaning will be. I was working in the front state room last night and pulled up the mdf (i think its mdf?) covering the holding tank and water tank. The smell coming from the holding tank area nearly burned my eyes and throat. As I guessed that should be the main culprit of the stank. The sanitation hoses are 27 years old and I am hoping the smell will improve greatly after I replace them. It looks like the job is going to be rough as I expected from reading people experiences online. There is very very little space to work with and right now I do not see how I can easily get the the hose clamps connecting the hose the the deck pump out fitting. I may have to cut an access port. I am not sure. I am not looking forward to this job one bit but I think it is a priority at this point.

Simply pulling the cushions out during the winter greatly helped mine. Pure Ayre is another excellent product. There are also chlorine dioxide canisters that you can buy that work overnight. It releases a gas and somehow it makes things smell less. I have one but havent tried it yet. I think you're off to a really good start with the cushions though

YIPES, 27 YO sanitation hoses ! Not sure but those may be classified as biological weapons.

For sure the source of smell will be removed. Be sure to use the top quality hoses as mentioned by Peggie Hall. I have used her recommendation but just forget the name of them right now. She recommends a newer release which is noted for its flexibility. Mine were like bending 2 X 4's (the original recommendation). Expensive to say the least but you don't want to cut corners here.

Will also help to go after any fabrics in the boat and spray with Pure Ayre.

Yea I think they can be used as a weapon indeed. The hose is Raritan Saniflex I used it in my Capri 22 when I put in an MSD Porta Poti, defiantly will use that again.
