Sail Magazine's November issue has an article written by Mike Harker. Mike is the chap that has completed 24,000 miles in his beautiful blue hulled 466. This tells about an experience he had after losing his rudder after it became entangle in some fishing nets out in the Pacific. He talks about going through three different designs before getting back to a safe anchorage. Hunter somehow heard about his problem and had air freighted a replacement rudder to this remote island. This is really an eye-opening tale; one we all should take to heart should the unheard of calamity happen. John Richard s/v Jack's Place

That's a Great "Jack's Place" Web Site!

That's a great web site Jack has! Some really wonderful pictures. Of course, blue skies tend to help :) The new vertical-batten main with the large roach obviously has really helped your performance and from the web site pictures you obviously enjoy it when boat speed gets up over 8 knots. Yeaaaaa....!!! Looks like you're getting kinda addicted to this "racing thing". Question: What about the prop? Is it a fixed-blade or feathering? Looked at the haulout pictures but couldn't tell.

What a great website

Hi John, After reviewing your web site I felt compelled to tell you how much I enjoyed it. John, it is truley wonderful the way you express your love of sailing, family and living life. I feel like I know you and the great person you must be. Jack's Place looks like a beautiful boat and has an owner that truley cares about her and will always look after her. Congradulations on doing well in your races and above all just enjoying all that you do. I was born and raised in So. Cal. and spent many days hanging around Newport and Balboa. Go all the way back to the Rendezvous Ball and Dickie Dell and the Dell Tones down by the Newport Pier. Great times great memories. Wish you the best in your future adventures and looking forward to sharing them with you through your web site.

Comments to John Nantz and Darrel

Thank you both for you comments on the web site. It began as a more/less experiment and has grown into a full blown endeavor. I encourage you to try; if I can do it, anyone can. John: The prop is a 18X14x1.25 stock fixed two blade. I have decided to replace it with a Martec Mk IV Geartec 19X13X1.25 two blade folding. This will increase boat speed by 0.5 +/- knots which is what the boat needs in our light wind conditions to be truely competitive. Darrel: You have REALLY taken me back to 1965 with your comments on Dick Dale and the Del Tones. I was there the night the Rendezvous Ballroom burned down. I was working for NBPD and specifically remember seeing red taillamps melt from the heat of the fire. Best wishes to you. John Richard

John,

Darrel and J. Nantz expressed my feellings too. One thing to add, you are going to love the extra speed that prop gives you!

re Jack's Place Prop Reply

Thanks for the reply to the prop question. I was kinda wondering.... when you said the other boats were passing you by in the light air it raised my suspicions. However, since the mainsail was upgraded I would have assumed the prop would have been upgraded too but the boat speeds didn't seem to quite compute with the new sail (thought they should have been a tad better). I agree with Fred - when you get the new low-drag prop on and go out for a test drive you're going to be really, really surprised at how much quieter and faster she sails and how much better the upwind tracking is. If you can, please try to get some performance figures now and report back after the new prop is on. Of course, cleanliness of the bottom is all important too so it will be a little tough to make a good comparison. Maybe, for a more accurate comparison, one has to wait until the bottom is roughly the same condition? By the way, Jack is a good looking pooch!
