Does not have a drain. Nor did the original. I do not understand the need for one.

Re: Muffler questions

Just a couple of quick questions on mufflers and exhausts.
1. What is the difference between a muffler and a silencer?
2. Can a water lift muffler exit the boat at or below the waterline?
3. Like sandpiper asked, What is the difference between the water lift and the water
lock muffler?
4. Most of the mufflers I found have inlets/outlets that are too big. Is there a reducer that will work to fit my exhaust hoses?
1. A silencer is a muffler to an englishman. A muffler is a scarf to an englishman.:D
2. A waterlift muffler should not exit below the water - this would add too much backpressure to the exhaust.
3. A waterlift muffler is usually just a can with the inlet near the top and the outlet extending with a standpipe to near the bottom. A waterlock usually has more of an "S" shape with some baffles in it.
4. If the inlet/outlet is too big for your engine, chances are the waterlock is to big - they are sized based on horsepower range and exhaust hose size. Vetus make a lot of smaller size waterlocks.

When I purchased my Vetus waterlock, they wanted me to calculate the total volume of the exhaust system. I suppose that was so they could sell me a unit which would contain all the water if the whole system backed up into it, assuming all the piping was full. Overkill?

The Vetus waterlock has two drains - one for each part of the assembly. However, we usually run the engine with the water intake in a bucket of antifreeze. When the exhaust comes out pink then the h20 is out - hopefully. I have heard of some mechanics who blow out all the lines etc. with compressed air. I still drained my waterlock after running the antifreeze through. Haven't been to the boat yet to find out if my winterizing was successful.
