I need help with the location of the muffler in my C27. I have a Universal 5411 and have just replaced the exhaust elbow. My engine makes plenty of noise when I have to motor and would like to add a muffler to the exhaust line which currently has none.....doesnt look like it ever did. The archives seems to have the lift muffler located between the engine and the elbow. Don't see how this is possible in my boat. Is is possible to locate a lift muffler...or an inline muffler....between the elbow and the transom? i.e cut the exhaust hose and splice in a muffler?? Hope someone can clear this up for me. Thanks. Steve

This link will take you to a diagram for a Catalina 30 that is of the same vintage as your boat and should be similar to how your boat should be set up. I believe that the fitting that you mentioned in your earlier post is shown here at the high point of the exhaust hose and is a one-way valve (it should click as the exhaust pulses)designed to prevent backflow of seawater into the exhaust system. In any case the order should be (from the engine manifold out): 1) Exhaust Elbow, 2) Water-lift Muffler, 3) Exhaust Hose, 4) One-Way Valve, 5) More Exhaust Hose, 6) Transom Exhaust Fitting. The exhaust elbow screws into the manifold at one end and is fitted to the muffler at the other end by two short lengths of exhaust hose, between which is a short piece of pipe with a smaller pipe brazed to it forming a lopsided Y fitting. The cooling water outlet hose is attached to the smaller pipe so that the used cooling water is "injected" into the exhaust just ahead of the muffler. My guess is that someone modified your boat along the way and eliminated the water-lift muffler. It shouldn't be too difficult of a job to put one in.
