I had signed up for this workshop and I was unable to make it. Here's their letter after they got my $150. Greetings, Moyer Marine Inc. is pleased to announce a spring workshop on May 31, 2008. The workshop will be hosted by Spring Garden Repair in the beautiful farming country of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. For MapQuest and GPS purposes, the address is 145 Spring Garden Road, Kinzers, PA 17535. The price of the workshop is $150 which includes coffee, breakfast pastries and lunch. Check-in time is from 7:00 to 8:00 am, with the actual workshop beginning promptly at 8:00 and running until 5:00 pm. Each workshop is a balance between lecture, guided discussion and-hands on subjects. Here's a link to the agenda, to give you an idea of what's covered in the workshop: http://www.moyermarine.com/agenda.pdf In order to control the size of the group and maximize the opportunity for hands-on assistance, you will need to pre-register at (410) 810-8920 using MasterCard, Visa or American Express. A reminder will be sent out in approximately one week with suggestions for local motels and some thoughts on sights of interest, in the event family members or friends will be traveling with you. Looking forward to seeing you on May 31st, Don Moyer ------------------------------------------- MOYER MARINE INC. www.moyermarine.com Well I never got any more correspondance from them until I wanted my money refunded. and the following email was sent. Mr. Ankers, Thank you for contacting Moyer Marine Inc. Full refunds are issued to workshop participants when notification is given by a customer two weeks prior to the workshop. This action allows Moyer Marine to accept other requests from customers wishing to attend the workshop thereby taking your place. We received your telephone message on Friday, May 30 regarding your cancellation. We were unable to locate someone who could take your place at the last moment. If cancellations are due to a medical emergencies or a death in the immediate family, information/confirmation must be provided and a partial refund will be issued. Notification will be sent via Email regarding any other workshops held by Moyer Marine Inc. We hope your schedule will allow for your attendance. Regards, Brenda Moyer I suggest if you are so inclined to risk your money on the workshop that you be sure to sign up for the waiting list and don't give them any money until you show up or your mother dies. Apparently they need the money. Their business must not be doing well or their classes aren't filling up for some reason. They also never suggested any places to stay and it was really out in the boondocks. Not exactly a place you could fly into. If anyone went to this workshop you might let the others know how it went. PS: You only get a partial refund if your mother dies. Looks like Don and Brenda need a marketing workshop. Don't bite the hand that feeds you. Your workshop should be for building up customer relations and goodwill and building future sales.

atomic 4 workshop my 2c

Im sorry about your $150 loss on the workshop. Im not surprised about the refusal of the workshop people to return your money. They probably dont have it. I would be surprised if you offered to sell them your Atomic 4 for $150 and they agreed to buy it. I had two boats with atomic 4`s in them a long time ago. Both inboards ended up as moorings. There`s a Pearson 30 in a driveway near where I live thats been for sale for 3 years. This is a clean boat with good sails. Asking $9000 He will never sell it. Nobody wants to pay the $14 or 15K to take the atomic out and put a new diesel in it. Ive got a friend with a 36 footer with an atomic 4 in it. This guy owns an auto repair shop. He`s an ace mechanic and ignition man. He keeps it running as well as can be expected. He told me at the end of this season he`s pulling it out and putting a new diesel in. Hes tired of spending half of his sailing time keeping it running. Here my opinion: The Atomic 4 will let you down when you need it. All its gonna take is one splash of salt water on that updraft carburetor and it wont start. The industry abandoned the infamous Atomic 4 over 30 years ago. There has to be reason for it.

Hmmmm

Barkintine, did you not know about the refund policy when you signed up? Did you ask? Have you ever spoken to Don or Brenda on the phone? They spend hours every day speaking with customers for free. They also stand behind their products and do not hesitate to make things right sometimes even out of warranty. They are the best and nearly only resource for these engines. Last year, I attended a diesel seminar at Hansen Marine and they also do not refund after a certain date. You wanted a refund the day before huh? They tried to fill your spot and now you are whining about it? Bffatcat, the A4 was put into boats as new engine up through the early 80s. There are thousands still in service. I am no mechanic but I have rebuilt a few engines in my earlier days and I had no trouble keeping mine running fine. These are not difficult to work on and if properly maintained will outlast many diesels in a marine environment. Sailors kill diesels because they don't run them hard or long enough. The A4 can take short term usage much better than any diesel.

reply to barkentine Atomic 4`s

I think you missed your calling. you should have gone into business restoring and selling atomic 4s, old palmers, kermaths and other assorted gasoline sailboat inboards. That have faded into thge past. Its to bad I didnt know about you years ago when I deeped sixed 2 atomic 4. I found a good use for them: moorings. I would have given them to you free. Please do everyone on this board a favor. Stop bragging about the virtues of the Atomic 4. You going to cost some novice who dosent know any better a lot of money and grief. Sure if your tied up to a dock or in a yard and have some time and knowledge you can get one running. BUT if you need the engine to get down a narrow channel or to help get you out of a blow 4 out of 5 times its gonna let you down. One splash of salt water on that zenith updraft carburetor, or a damp distributor and it wont start. And you know it. They didnt stop putting them in sailboats almost 30 years ago in favor of a much more expensive diesel for no reason

Yup Tim I should probably not make any comments about gas inboards. Im going to refrain from making further comments about the ubiquitous Atomic 4. I guess It gotta be me alone and no one else thats had trouble with them. Yeah I must be a pretty important guy according to you. To singlehandedly over 25 years ago get a company to discontinue a great reliable product that cost 1/3 of what a diesel costs. From now on when a novice asks for an opinion on a gas inboard Im going to refer them to you our resident expert. I guess I dont know much. after 50 years of racing and cruising. I looked at your profile IM not impressed. You Know what Tim Im willing to wager you dont have an Atomic 4 in your boat.

Wow

You need to relax a little bffatcat. Do you always get so worked up when someone has a different opinion? I never said you were wrong. I was simply giving the original poster an opposing opinion. I wanted him to know that just becuase you had problems does not mean all A4s are bad. I obviously offended you and for that I am sorry but it is hard to argue with 20,000. I do not have an A4 in my current boat but I did in my previous boat(pearson 28). It was a great boat and a great engine. The current owner has had no problems with the engine either. That boat sold to the first looker for my asking price that was $3,500 more than what I paid(with the original A4). As for my profile, it is not there to impress anyone. It is simply who I am and what I have done. Your reference to it is quite offending as it speaks to my character. I have not updated it in a long time but if you would like a list of my accomplishments I would be glad to supply them(in proper english).

Hi Gail

I can't help coming back to visit. You never forget your first love!

I loved your final article this year. I read it the day after returning from our 2 week September cruise! We raced up to NE harbor and had a blast. The sailing was nice the whole 100nms. It took us 27 hours and the wind only stopped for about 15 miutes around 2am Saturday morning. We managed to frustrate a Bene First that was rated 60 by staying ahead(physically) of him until Seguin I. I think we took first but the official results have not yet been posted. Carter must have forgotten.
