After many years as a small boat /day sailor ( Lazer, Force Five) I am looking to move up to my first cruiser style boat. I am researching the Catalina 22 and want to know how this boat handles single handed as the wife rarely goes along. Thanks for any feed back.

single handing

I single hand mine every time I use it. You can make (or buy) a mast up to step the mast by yourself, (I use a gin pole as well) I did run my Halyards to the cockpit which made it even easier. You will not be the only person that single hands a C22, I think you will find its a very easy boat to sail alone.

Easy to Single hand

I upgraded a fes years ago after sainling a 16 ft. Neptune. The C22 is an easier boat to sail. I led my Main Halyard to the cockpit, and also added some cam cleats for the jib sheets. The most expensive upgrade I did was to add a CDI furler and buy a 150 genoa. I also have a double reef on my main sail, and am glad I do because it makes it so much more pleasant and safe to sail when the winds start to pick up. Pymatuning Lake is very shallow, and the chop is bad when the winds are heavy. If you don't want to invest in a furling headsail, at least rig up a downhaul so you can drop the jib quickly. I believe you will enjoy sailing your C22. One word of advice is "reef early" because the C22 sails much better at 15 degrees or less. If you rig the boat for single handling, your wife may come sailing more, since she can lounge inside or outside while you sail. Care to ask me how I know? ;)

Read Pat Royce's Sailing Illustrated

He even uses a C22 to show how to rig it for singlehanded use.

Single handing C22

Hi Dan, I recently decided to get back into sailing and due to my wifes ill health will have to single hand the boat. I had a Macgregor 25 before and decided to check out 21 or 22 foot boats this time. I finally decided on a C22 for good cabin space, similar to the Mac 25 except no enclosed head. The boat I found already had a furling foresail and I had the main halyard ran to the cockpit. I also had it rigged with EZ Jacks and a main downhaul that are controlled from the cockpit. The only time I want to be on the foredeck is when the boat is in the slip. I checked out the Venture 21, San Juan 21, Mac 22 and then decided on the C22 because it has more of a bigger boat feel in the 22 foot length. A big plus is that you can get virtually any part for maintanence or repair and with such a large fleet you can buy one for whatever your pocketbook can handle and there is so much C22 information available on the internet. Good Luck, Jon

I rent a slip at Bowers. It's on the Ohio side just south of the causeway. I have some friends at Century club though and have considered there. For the price, Bowers is probably best for us though. Wonder what your cost is there. s t m i l l e r @ n e o n t . c o m (no spaces.) Not to be OT, I bought for the same reason as Jon Golliher. I am also taken by the looks of the Catalina for some reason and the utility. I am a new owner of a 1987 new style boat but I have sailed my 22 single-handed but in easy winds so far. I knw that it really helps to have the lines leading to the cockpit. Single line reefing for the main and either roller furling in the bow or a jib downhaul to keep that jib from climbing the forestay. :) My main concern is falling overboard while fooling around on the foredeck. Single-handed the boat isn't going to want to come back and pick you up very well so be prepared for that possibility. ~Bilbo N.E. Ohio

shouldn't be a problem

I have a different model, but the boat is small enough to do what you want. Think about rigging all the lines to the cockpit, roller furling and maybe an auto pilot.

Slip at Pymatuming

Mike; I am also interested in slip rental at Pymatuming. I used to fish there years ago. I am looking for big water to sail my C22 on. Any advise will be greatly appreciated. If you don't mind; a price range would be helpful. Yacht clubs, marinas etc. Thanks, Boatlubber2 rusherb411@aol.com
