I have a 1972 Catalina 27. The traveler is located at the rear of the cockpit. I would like to know if anyone has information on moving it to the area by the companionway. I want to do this to allow better seating in the cockpit, and to allow me to put up a bimini top while under sail. Thanks in advance, and I love this site.

Search the Archives

I believe that I saw a posting on this topic sometime back, so search the archives. I will comment, however, that you will lose something in functionality. The end-boom sheeting you have now is more accessible from the helm and is much faster due to the fact that the midboom sheeting requires a higher mechanical advantage meaning that you need to pull a lot more mainsheet for a given task.

Garhauer kit.....

Catalina Yachts (the factory) has a kit to convert to mid-boom sheeting. Garhaurer Marine puts the kit together using their fine components. You can call the Catalina factory, but I suggest you call Garhaurer direct at 909 985-9993 and talk to Guido or Mark. They will hook you up with what you need, and tell you how to install it. You will definitely need a 6x mainsheet system, because the end-boom, 4x mainsheet, is not sufficient purchase for the decreased leverage of a mid-boom set up. You'll also need a riser to support the new track location. You may be able to use the same car, but you'll need traveler blocks and cleats that mount directly to the end of the track.
