Looking at installing Raymarine Type 1 Linear Drive below decks on our Oc. 351 and would appreciate anyone's experience and advice on this project. Where is the best place to mount the drive foot? Looks like the bottom side of the propane tank locker will be the best place. Can the connector pin for the push rod be mounted on the quadrant or do I need to install a rudder arm, if so-what length? Will the X5 Wheel Pilot computer drive the Type 1, if I install a manual switch for the clutch? Any other input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The Beneteaus 3x1s are built with a type 1 rotary drive in mind. The drive chain goes up to the wheel spindle in parallel with the rudder chain.

Thanks- Had not considered a rotary drive. Definitely will look into it. Please send any additional info, photos, or advise.

Agree with Lee. I installed a rotary drive on my previous boat a '97 381. It is designed to fit right in the bottom of the pedestal.

I installed a type 1 linear type in my Beneteau 361. I used a strong plate attached to the two "open sides" of the quadrant and the drive was installed at the back side of the wood of the port cabin (using some more pieces of wood and strong bolts). Some photos attached.

beneteau 361 Raymarine EV200 Autopilot

Hi Philip,
I also have a Beneteau 361 and I have just purchased the new Raymarine EV200 with electric linear drive , type 1. I have also purchased the quadrant bracket, drive bracket, backing plate for the drive bracket from Beneteau to install the linear drive as per Beneteau's plan in the starboard lazarette. I find that there is not much room in that lazarette and looking at your pictures I think I will install mine exactly like you did.

I assume I can still use the quadrant bracket that I got from Beneteau as well as the Drive bracket and backing plate, am I right?
Did you remove the propane holding tanks box?

Beneteau recommend an additional wood reinforcement piece for the auto pilot.
How did you reinforce the wall where you mounted the linear drive? There is an opening just under your linear drive and I was wondering if the panel was strong enough?

I think that you installed the autopilot pack(computer) just behind the propane box, How easy is it to make the connections?

Thanks in advance for your help. If you have additional photos I would like if not too much trouble for you to see them.

I want to install a Webasto AirTop 3900 on my sailboat and would like to find out if you came across such an installation.

Regards,
Georges

Hi Philip,

I studied your photos and noticed that you installed the linear drive sideways and that you added a piece of wood. Did you add wood to both side of the wood cabin just above the opening providing access to the empty space behind the wall or just on the side where the drive is installed? What is the wood thickness that you installed?

With this installation I think I won't need Beneteau mounting bracket and back plate.

If you look at my quadrant you will notice that the holes for mounting the quadrant bracket are already there, I will have to figure out what bolt size is needed.

I much prefer your installation because it does not take valuable space in the starboard lazarette.

Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much for the help.
Regards,
Georges

Philip,
Oups, sorry, forgot to ask if you had to remove the quadrant for the installation?
Thanks

Though i didn't install it myself, no I don't see any reason to remove the quadrant. The plate (the quadrant bracket) was simply installed on the holes of the quadrant.

I think the quadrant bracket you bought is more or less the same as the "custom made" plate I have used. Only the shape is different.
I cannot answer all your questions as I didn't do the installation myself but I am attaching some more photos.
I have a feeling that the installation is more or less accrording to Beneteau's instructions (shown in the little color photo B) but on the port side instead of the starboard.

Wood was added only on the side where the drive is installed.

Definately no. But can it be removed? I wish I could remove it (or know how to remove it) when I dropped the rudder last year and had to work for hours bent into three (!) in the starboard lazarette and through that hole in the port cabin. It was a really big job for a tall guy (1.88cm) like me!!!

Hi Philip, Thank you very much for all the details photos. They will be very helpful and I will install my linear drive like you did in the port side, leaving the starboard lazarette free.
As far as the propane tank goes, i believe that if you remove the rubber gasket you will have access to the screws holding the propane box in place. The attached photos is from Grand Pas 1, a Beneteau 361. You will notice that he removed the propane to gain access to the area behind the port wall.
