I am in the market for an outboard motor for my new C250WK. I would appreciate people's comments and experiences re: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke; the max motor weight issue; steering limitations of large head motors on the C250. Thanks. Direct replies may be sent to AlTherrien@msn.com. Discount source recommendations also welcome.

EPA Considerations

Hi Alan, If you consider the fact that it is just a matter of time before all 2 strokes are outlawed because of pollution laws, you'd probably be better off just going with the 4 stroke and bit the bullet on the additional weight. On the plus side however, you'll have an engine that's cleaner running and much more fuel efficient. Here in California, they've begun severe restrictions on 2 strokes, particularly those in jet skies. Of course older 2 strokes will probably be grandfathered, but they may still restrict where you can legally use them, especially the higher horsepowered engines. Check out the Tohatsu. The horsepower to weight ratio is probably the best on the market right now, with Mercury probably being the worst. Also, when choosing a new engine, go for slightly more horsepower than you think you'll need right now. That will provide you with a "safe margin" should you take your boat where there are significant tides or currents. Good Luck !! Ed P. "See Da Moon" S/N 13106

Making a choice on motor

I agree with the consideration for the 4 stroke and especially if you will do any cruising. A 4 stroke will give you better mileage and do it quieter. A hefty question is whether you desire motor steering. From what I have heard, those with 9.9s lock em down because there isn't enough room for turning. I have a 8 and it will steer fine. Motor steering is often a big advantage. If it had to come at the cost of minimal horse power for the boat, I wouldn't reccomend the 8hp but it drives my water ballast which is a few hundred lbs heavier than your wing at very near hull speed at half throttle. The 8 starts very easily but if you need electric start, then you will have to go with a 9.9 hp motor and give up the steering. Congratulations and enjoy your new boat....Arlyn
