wow. . .

I think those pictures are the worst that I've seen from this storm. I hope everyone was adequately insured, and that no one was injured while trying to protect their boat.

Are these pictures of Herrington Harbor North?

Seeing these pictures makes me very sad for the owners and very happy we made it through without a scratch. Jim S/V Java

I'm surprised

to see how many owners left sails on their boats. We knew well in advance that we were not going to be hit badly in the New York area. Our main concern was high water, which we were spared. Nonetheless, I and most other people in the marina spent half a day adding lines and chafing gear and either removing sails and top hamper -- anything that would increase windage -- or lashing them down as tight as could possibly be. No one suffered any damge.

Worse in person

I went down to HHNorth yesterday to move my boat back to HHSouth (which still has a few docks without power, but otherwise is back to normal). We were hauled, so suffered no damage. It is very sobering standing on the shore by A, B, and C docks to see the twisted planks, banged up boats, and masts rising up from underwater. What struck me more, though, was how much the boats docked there were tossing about under quite calm conditions. When you look out, you can see that there is really nothing between those docks and the Bay. Given how the boats were moving yesterday, I can't imagine how bad it was under hurricane conditions. Always one in every crowd

to have something unhelpful to say, I guess its me. HHN is unusual for the Bay in that it is not located in the shelter of a river or creek, but is quite exposed to the Bay itself (albeit from an unusual direction.) I think this prestigious and expansive marina gave many people a sense of false security that they were as well situated and provided for as any other marina. While I doubt that their slips will go wanting for clients, the next storm will see some major scrambling for cover.

Your Observation is Helpful

John - I think your observation is helpful. Being open to a bay is someting that owners should consider when it comes to storm protection and the safety of their vessel. Some of the largest marinas in Puget Sound are fairly open and protectd only by a breakwater. If the water level rose a couple feet or so above a really high tide they would be open too. Also, your obervation that because the marinas are/might be considered "upscale" does not necessarily mean they are any better at storm protection than some backwater marina. I agree that this sense of false security you mentioned is something one should be careful with. The next time there is a major weather event headed our way I'm sure we'll all be a little bit more careful.

Very Odd thing about this hurricane Isabel....

is that while this hurricane in the United States was horrible, there was a very disastrous Hurricane named Marty that Ravaged Mexico just last week...I don't even think the damage it caused made any new coverage in the states what so ever, because of Isabel...strange how we seem to look inward in this country...here are pictures of two different places of the scores affected...On the first one, go down abit and click on the obvious link... http://www.bajainsider.com/start_pages/page-weather_start.htm One this one check out September 23rd - September 26th... http://www.latitude38.com/LectronicLat/LectronicLat.html As for the "Related Link", Look for the many "more Photos" links on this page...This one has the most pictures....I have lots of friends who lost thier boats in this one just a few days ago...My boat was on the hard when Marty went through, and Thank God, other than a few scrathes, she came through fine...Had you heard of this hurricane at all?
