I've been toying with the idea of foils on the 530. Wanna go halfsies? We each get em 6 months a year.

Alex Thomson said they work great till you hit something. Then it is a bummer and you end up second in the Vendee Globe.

The foils were slightly more than stainless anchor chain.

They're not only wearing PFDs but also crash helmets!

Don't know bout you, but I sail to enjoy the ride, that just doesn't look enjoyable to me, exhilarating yes, if I want to get there faster I think I would just cross over and purchase a stink boat.

I agree in terms of duration. It would get stressful to try to go any distance. The stability seems lacking. Could you imagine a fully foiling VOR? Day after day of trying to manage the boat on full foil? Too stressful.
My new trimaran was going 12 mph in about 10 knots of wind Sunday. That was plenty fast with no loss of stability. I suspect it will go much faster! One thing I do notice is the minimal heel on the foiling monohull. That would make my wife happy... til she realized the entire hull was flying!

How do you come about? Does the foil bend away when you come back to the slip?

Looks like this was just a technology demonstration with only a port side foil installed. Their plans are to use data gained from testing the port side foil to install a redesigned foil for testing on the starboard side. This is being done to eventually have a full automatically stabilized foil system for mono hulls.

The SEAir Mini 747
The 6,50m long monohull, object of all our attentions, will soon fly with SEAir's multidirectional foil system. Pushing foils further to by flying across the Atlantic Ocean will soon be a reality.

The ground-breaking Magnum 747 prototype, designed and built by David Raison, was transformed into a flight demonstrator. It has been equipped with a portside foil with eight sensors and a control unit allowing to manoeuvre the foil. Trials during the first trimester of 2017 will allow in depth testing of different offshore take-off and flight stabilisation settings. SEAir will then work on modifying the systems and the settings to allow the most durable flight solutions possible. Creating power is no longer a problem, but making use of it is far more complex. Starboard will also be equipped with an even more advanced foil, with electronic controls.

1st flight of an offshore racing monohull !

Check out Alex Thomson's adventure on the Hugo Boss boat. Around the world on a foil boat. And he hit something early in the race breaking one of his foils. Definitely not relaxing.
