Mooring deal with the devil

This year through a business associate I received a free mooring in Newport, RI., the gentleman was a friend and would refuse any type of compensation. The location was ideal, close to all the waterfront bars and cafe's. Perfect place for many events, america's cup trial, queen mary 2 visit, tall ships, and the Newport Jazz festival. The problem is he has taken his mistress to the boat several times when I wasn't around. He is meticulously clean but leaves behind clues, like the girls blonde hairs, my scotch bottle goes down a bit, and leaves a cd or dvd aboard that I don't own. The captain quarters are never used, should I remain aloof, or should I risk losing the spot, obviously there is no free lunch but being new to the sailing game I feel like I have made a deal with the devil for a spot that is really second to none. Most moorings in this area can run as much as $2700 a season with daily rates in Newport from $40-$100. My wife loves the place, and thinks it nice to have someone keeping a "eye" on the boat when we're not around, cleaning up, and leaving nice music cd's behind for us to listen to while sailing.

Keep the mooring

I got my mooring after being on a waiting list for 6 years. Good seasonal mooring spots are not only expensive, but difficult to find. Usually brokers associated with the marina will place new boat buyers with moorings before outsiders. Your friend sounds like a local, keep the spot, say nothing, buy cheaper liquor and lock the captains quarters.

Buy him a set of sheets as well. Sounds like both of you have a good deal going.

Cheapskate

Michael: Life is too short to be such a skinflint. Cheap booze and locked cabins do not say "Yachtsman". By the way; is it a question of moral turpitude here or WHat? "meticulously clean" and "free moorage" are the key words here. (Mistress cooties can be removed with a hand vac.)

Not sure I'd be comfortable with someone (+)

coming aboard my boat without my knowledge--unless there was an arrangement or offer to the effect of "hey thanks for the mooring! Feel free to use the boat" --then it would be different. If I understand you correctly, in theory you could show up and find your boat already rockin? Bill

Arrangement

If you and your wife aren't morally upset about the reason for your friend's generousity, then why create a problem. The only real conflict I see is if you go to the boat for a sail, and your benefactor is "using" the boat. As far as liqour, etc.: I'd buy the best scotch just for his use, and drink the cheaper stuff my self. It may be wise to get a way to insure that you both aren't planning to use the boat at the same time. Then again, he might enjoy a short cruise while at it!

Guess I'm a little "different"

I'd never put up with someone coming on my boat uninvited and without good cause. I'd confront him, tell him he's free to use the boat in exchange for the mooring, but WITH NOTICE.

Set up a web cam and

piss in the scotch bottle. With the right preparation you could own that mooring forever

Fellow Sailors

Thank you all for your advice. I've decided that for my wife's happiness and keeping with the spirit of becoming a true "yachtsman" my friends' visits to my boat with his mistress (he's aware of my work/sail schedule, so there's no chance we'll walk in on his indiscrections) will go unmentioned and we'll just enjoy having someone "taking care" of the boat while we're away. It's worth the free mooring, free cleaning, free cd's ect. And we'll refill the Johnny Walker Blue.
